Mail to a brand new building

Hey everyone,

Moving house soon to a brand new build, just curious to how the postman will be aware of where the new place is? I assume they are updated with new builds regularly? Just worried about ordering anything as the postcode seems to take me to the adjacent road on Google Maps and obviously the road I will be on doesn't exist. It's more like an alcove than a proper road though.

My dad mentioned it takes a year to update these sort of things but I'm skeptical, it can't take that long surely!

If your regular postman is an experienced postman, he will already be aware of the new build, us experienced postmen are very keen on being up to date with any changes on our regular rounds.
However, you can assure your dad that it does not take a year to update things. We have a system called A Plus, which is updated on a regular basis and new builds are sent through to the office in question.

I would be more worried about the couriers and not Royal Mail.

Good point, hopefully it won't be an issue with couriers either - is there a way to write an address to make it more obvious were the new building is for couriers. IE. "2 Fake avenue, off fake street"? Since it's just off the road where the postcode shows up on googlemaps.

Yes, that is exactly how you could write your address. You will be amazed with some of the crazy written addresses we get, especially in the rurals.

To check the address is registered by the builder/council visit http://www.royalmail.com/find-a-postcode" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - thats usually the most up to date version. However most couriers will only update their databases when RM send out a new software update which IIRC is about once every 3 months.

Saying that I have been at my current address for 20 years now and the couriers still can't find it because its tucked away off a main street

Thanks! Doesn't seem to be on there yet, would I have to ask the council to register this address or is it safe to assume they've applied/sent off the details to Royal Mail already?

Haha, pretty much my situation now, hopefully the won't have too much trouble finding our place!

Email the address to the Address Management team - addressmaintenance@royalmail.com. Let us know your full address details, where the property is (for example what is either side of the property) also is it a new property? We'll then let you know if this can be added or whether you’ll need to register the property with your Local Authority.
