Yep, I'm sure you'd do a better job than the 'planners' that allegedly do the job now!

Martin Walsh announced the number on last night's YouTube, I think it was 8k non drivers and 60% of them have no license.
He might know how many duties don't require a driving licence (are non-driving duties) but how does he know 60% of the people on those non-driving duties don't have a driving licence?

I would give any driver two weeks before they were begging to come off it again.

I'm on a 1in4 and the two weeks that I work 5 days in a row almost kill me and that's without double and triple mail every day.

The thought of doing that every week would probably see me heading for the door so no uproar from this driver.
15+ years ago Everyone used to work 6 days a week and bags were heavier with bills, sky/cable mags etc
It was 22 years ago that the single daily delivery was introduced and we moved to a 5 day week.
I know, I was there.
The delivery was 3 hrs on a bad day and half that on a Saturday.
Fatigue wise there is no comparison with what we're expected to do now.
Absolutely, I was there too, no comparison whatsoever, I remember arriving home on a Saturday at the same time the wife was getting up to walk the dog, great times, wasn't absolutely knackered like now, yeah I know I'm 20 odd years older but I could definitely manage that these days as opposed to how it is now with an even bleaker future bearing down.

You'd have to ask him but I'm sure royal mail knows the stats.

Those without driving in their contracts will have been employed before park and loop and van sharing was allowed even an idea in a penpushers head

It wasn’t a prerequisite when we took the job no matter if it is now for new entrants and no matter if you think everyone needs to drive to keep a job ( they don’t )

It smacks of jealousy mate
Call it what you like but a mon to fri duty is a pipe dream for the vast majority of posties , except non drivers apparently.
I don’t even know where this Mon- Fri thing has come because the pilot offices where this has been trialled: it’s too knackering for a walker to do the walking loops every pigging day. That is what they have found.

So the idea now is that they are indoors on a Saturday in order to give them some respite.

The grass is not greener on the other side.
No Martin Walsh has just said that ''no postman wants to be indoors on a Saturday'' and so they are trying to come up with some sort of Starburst way of working to have Saturday shifts be outdoors too

Whilst at the same time saying the non drivers have a fatigue issue and that indoors on Saturdays is the only respite

yeah im baffled too
Oh that’s right, I forgot he mentioned Starburst 🙄

Yes chicken

The business chose to change, not the workers

What else do you think the business should be able to change and force you to do that isn’t in your contract?

I have no license FWIW and never have done
I’ve said this before and i will say it again.

Unless every single duty is to become a single van duty then non-drivers are not redundant.

Unless they’re operating a vehicle at the same time which I’m sure is illegal.

Sad state of affairs on here with people wanting people to lose their jobs for reasons out of their control.

Btw , it’s now takes a lot of money and a long time to even get driving lessons and pass a test these days.

Are Royal Mail going to pay for it and seeing as though we’re now so poorly paid will the union actually address both things.
Who’s talking about people loosing their jobs ? If you don’t have a license that’s fine , if you have license and choose not to drive , that’s unacceptable.
So if I have a skill outside of the contract I was employed on that I payed for and was for my own benefit that an employer should automatically have a right to that skill ?

What if I’ve got a maths degree , should I help them plan duties too? Or a qualified chef ? Work in the canteen 😂
Are any of those a prerequisite to join the job now ?
Was a driving licence a prerequisite to the job then ?
I never said it was , but driving is now relevant to the job unlike the other things that poster quoted.
Like Sundays ?

Typical deflection. Applications for a job in Parliament or RM CEO are probably on LinkedIn
It’s a simple question, what part are you struggling with ?

So you think that people who have a different contract from you with different original terms should be forced to do what you signed up for? Be careful what you wish for. :wave
I certainly don’t feel the answer to it is giving them a mon / fri duty as previous poster said .
Mon-fri should not be something a non-driver even thinks about.
Monday will be three days mail .
Tuesday will also be three days mail.
Then the week starts getting busy.
By Friday you would be destroyed.
Every week until the end of time.
I wouldn't wish that particular attendance pattern on my worst enemy.
No neither would I and people seem to be suggesting it would be easy doing a mon-fri. It absolutely won’t be and non-drivers would be knackered.

I'm a perfect example have driven for many years at royal mail but now not allowed because medication. I'd happily take redundancy if they offer it but accept many would prefer not to
They can’t treat you like a pack pony. They have to take into consideration any ongoing medical issues people might have and then not include them in the full Pilot hell.

I’m also a driver on a 9 day fortnight and would love Saturday and Sunday off every week .
You should try doing a 1 in 6. Would probably put you in your place.
Not really, your on a shorter day compared to me .
So your original argument here is that pure walking duties are better off than drivers, yes?
Where have I said that ?
If you refer back to your earlier argument on this thread you will recall you said people on certain contracts should be...
Forced to drive or lose their job

Perhaps they could offer some kind of, umm, 'driving allowance' as incentive. Oh wait...

Unless the length of time on delivery is reduced, fatigue is going to increase.
Exactly. It's fine to go back to 2006 callrates if the walks were the same length they were then. A five hour span would be like doing half of the neighbouring duty. At least your line manager would probably agree to double time because failing a duty hadn't yet become blasé.
  • Make duties longer
  • Make duties heavier
  • ???
  • Less fatigue
The machine stops.
