I've got a t-shirt coming from the USA, that has been stuck at the same status on the USPS tracking system since 16th August, it says:
'Your item departed a transfer airport in HEATHROW, LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM on August 16, 2022 at 9:00 pm. The item is currently in transit to the destination'.
On the Royal Mail tracking system, it hasn't been updated since 14th August and says:
'Item Leaving overseas - United States of America'.
Any ideas what's going on with it? Is this lost in the post now?

No, it's in customs.
USPS track items off the plane and into customs. Most postal administrations don't do this, and Royal Mail don't seem to recognise these tracking points. So the contradiction you mention is completely normal.

USPS are just about the only ones who scan items before handing them over to customs. Based on the tracking on the RM website, my gut feeling is that it's not left the US yet

Howcome it's been stuck like this for over three weeks though? Customs doesn't usually take this long? Are they having a lot of issues/backlog problems there at the moment?
In past experience, my items have been in customs for a few days at most, then delivered.

Customs don’t tell you how long clearance takes at any given time. But we know they choose mail at random for extra checks and those items can take a lot longer: it is not reasonable to expect clearance time to be consistent. Plus, we are seeing an increase in complaints on this forum relating to clearance time so yes, there probably is a bit of an issue right now.
