Simon Thompson was given the job to run Covid Track and Trace, at a time the Government was giving jobs to mates.
Then he became boss of RM.
His future career / income doesn't depend on how well RM do, it depends on how well he pleases his real bosses, and what juicy jobs he can do for them in the future.
My theory is that the posties can ask for a 5% rise or a 25% rise, it doesn't matter. If Simon's government friends want posties to strike, he'll keep offering us bad deals, if his government friends want peace, he'll be told to end the strikes.
I'm guessing the next Tory leader will decide what will happen:
- if they want to project an aura of calm and control, they'll tell Simon to stop the strikes
- but they'll tell him to keep up with the strikes if it'll help them (to take headlines away from the cost of living crisis, skeletons in their closet, or because Labour is getting bad PR for being either too neutral or too supportive of the strikes)
