They seem to be at least one step above us if all the talk is true. Maybe we should call their bluff and all show up for work on the first strike date.
I mentioned that, partly in jest, on the other page… but I do wonder if that could be an interesting tactic.
If you can call sticking your head up your arse and not talking to anyone a tactic.!
I suppose it is a good tactic if you secretly want the strikes to happen so you can trial a new system and save on loads of wages and starve out the old lot and strengthen your negotiating position.
Just a coincidence Terry and Simon’s relationship turned and really unpopular proposals made right after the agency law was changed.
But I’m a conspiracy guy so feel free for anyone to tell me how I’m wrong.
A question.
We strike on Friday 26th. There's 2 days mail (+ untracked parcels) on Saturday. You shift say 3/4 or 2/3rds of it on Saturday.
Bank Holiday on Monday, so we come to work on Tuesday. There's not a lot of mail come through the system so Tuesday is more like a Monday.
95% + of postie will clear on the Tuesday as there will be more or less an average days worth of mail/parcels. Net 'gain' for striking posties is MINUS 1 DAYS WAGE. Net impact on RM is ZERO.
Can anyone tell me why/if I'm wrong?

You wont get anything Saturday, distribution will still be on strike.

The MO of striking has moved on from past disputes and are less focused on causing a backlog of mail and more about making RM worried about losing parcel contracts and worrying shareholders
Businesses who use RM for sending out their parcels are likely to worry about the situation and put pressure on RM bosses to find a solution or they will move business elsewhere
This in turn worries shareholders ( not all right enough, some will be behind what Simon is trying to do )
RM then use this threat as a reason not to strike as the work lost could be lost forever and lead to job losses but ultimately it is on them to keep the contracts and pissing off their workforce is on their own heads

If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

Your looking at it the wrong way. The impact on RM is not zero, it will be carnage for them and a badly damaged reputation. Tuesday is a short day anyway so not much time to clear much at all, certainly won’t be racing about that’s for sure.
Reading this thread you'd think agency and casual staff will do everything. The ones we use don't sort, drive or know anything about the local area never mind individual rounds. If RM manage to deliver 10% of the items I'll be amazed.

Royal Mail underestimate just how useful experience staff are - and by the same token how useless agency staff CAN be.
I take a pretty simplistic view of Industrial Action: I'm in a Union .... I get a vote (and so does everyone else) ..... IF the majority vote for IA my Union will tell me to Strike .... and I will Strike. There is no dilemma for me.
I recognise RMT is a discussion forum but I feel some people are just over thinking it and stressing themselves out Big Time.
Like all Wage Slaves, he had two crosses to bear: The people he worked for and the people he worked with! (Stephen Vizinczey.)
We want to strike. We want to support our union. But we also want answers.... how will it end? What's the end game look like,? What do we do in between strikes? Too much Facebooking and tub thumping and not enough grass roots comms for my liking. Keep going back to the hard line of a no strings inflation based pay rise. It was never on the table so why make such a song and dance about it. Either underestimating the members intelligence or the boards. Hope we are not just pawns in a great chess match
We will see how successful at clearing tracked and specials they are via agencies. For me I think this will make a huge difference to RMs negotiating position. Clearing them could be a disaster, but given how easy it is to pick up a van and PDA, and follow a pre planned course via sat nav, if they have ready enough vans PDAs and drivers then maybe they can achieve it, who knows.
There is still a lot of other eBay crap though to build up, never mind the letters, but perhaps they plan on keeping the tracked and specials to the agencies from parcel hubs so that when we’re not striking, that’s all we have to do to catch up?
I do agree though that it isn’t going to be easy for RM, a quick estimate I reckon you’d need about a third of the number of staff in our office to clear all of the tracked and specials, all on 8 hour days.
I suppose it just boils down to: Who do you Trust the most? And who do you feel has Your interests at heart?
Royal Mail is like having a controlling step dad in the family. They help you out but expect you to do loads of chores during the day in return. Now they have fathered some new kids on the block, you sort of feel like you're being pushed out because these new kids who don't know any better are also doing chores during the night as well and are getting less pocket money!
The CWU is like having a distant friend. You use to get on with them really well in the past, but you haven't seen them for months and months and thought because they didn't get in touch that they must be busy doing other things. Now all of a sudden they arrive at the front gates canvassing and counting on your support because you used to be good mates.
I really need to get out more Dorset
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
