Re: Item received at Langley HWDC
All this nonsense about customs seizing goods that contravene UK customs rules - twice I've had a cardigan imported from China disappear into that black-hole called Langley. Over the years I've bought thousands of pounds worth of stuff from China - fur coat, huge heavy artist easel, hifi components, plus the usual Aliexpress little things... all sailed through customs. Yet a blasted cardigan (clearly a threat to national security) failed on two separate occasions and shipped by different sellers to get past Langley.
And what's disgraceful about it is neither the buyer nor seller is notified about a delay or the disappearance of goods euphemistically 'lost' (in my case for several months) at Langley. Instead, we get posters in this thread lazily informing us of the rules. And RM? they wash their hands of it, and deny all responsibility.

I believe goods made in Wuhan are now banned, due to the human rights abuses there. And one of the main things that Wuhan makes is clothing. So, have you checked *exactly* where they were made?Japo wrote: ↑22 Jun 2022, 16:07All this nonsense about customs seizing goods that contravene UK customs rules - twice I've had a cardigan imported from China disappear into that black-hole called Langley ... I don't think any customs service anywhere in the world do this. It would cost time and therefore money. If you are unhappy with what customs do you need to complain to your MP.
Or using our own time to try and help people. Glad to know that it is appreciated.
Customs are a law enforcement agency. So RM no more have influence over them than I have influence over my local police force.
Do you have a question?

Lazily, you mean voluntarily for free in their own time.
With no respect due, as you showed none, if you wish to complain about Royal Mail please do not do it on this site. Please address all your questions through official Royal Mail channels.
We are not an official site, we are here to offer insight and advice, being called lazy by posters is unlikely to generate any sympathy or helpful responses.

Now you're being absurd. Products made in prison are not illegal. The US has a thriving convict-made industry: https://www.thrillist.com/gear/products ... lectronics

Re: Item received at Langley HWDC
Well it isn’t the Wuhan issue then.
This is the US Postal Service’s list of prohibitions & restrictions for sending in to the UK. You will see then items made in “foreign” prisons are prohibited. I take “foreign” in this case to mean non-UK.
https://pe.usps.com/text/imm/tz_018.htm
I don’t dispute that there are many prisoners engaged in making goods in prison. But you aren’t allowed to import them into the UK commercially.

Re: Item received at Langley HWDC
In reality postal workers would have to rip open every single package to see if they're manufactured in prison... how else would they know? And of course a cardigan would immediately give the game away with "made in Qincheng Prison".Snaggletooth wrote: ↑23 Jun 2022, 07:21

The first item was bought via Aliexpress. The second, which is identical, via Amazon. I suggest you stop your 'evil empire' larking about and accept the fact that China, in goods and retail, is a global force.

Re: Item received at Langley HWDC
I don't dispute that China is a "global force" in goods and retail, but that is completely irrelevant to the operation of UK customs, which is what you were asking about.
Postal workers don't do that, in fact it is a criminal offence in the UK for postal workers to open packages except in some very limited circumstances around undeliverable parcels.
Customs do open parcels, that is their job. We don't know exactly how they operate, but we know from the parcels that come through that some parcels are officially opened and resealed by customs.
Customs will almost be certainly be working to a list of brands, for instance:
Brands that are involved in immoral activities such as manufacturing in prisons or CITES violations;
Brands that are involved in activities that are illegal under international law, such as the use of forced labour in prison camps.
So in practice, they will probably see that your parcel was a cardigan from China, then they would take it to one side to examine it, which would be done by checking the brand on the cardigan's label against a list of brands known to take part in illegal forced labour in Wuhan.

It is very hard to comment based on what you posted. For the parcel that has stalled, could you please tell us:
1. Either the tracking number or copy and paste all the tracking information into the thread;
2. What was inside.

Pafum
..is not allowed in the international mail under UK law. It is also on Morocco's restricted list.
Even within the UK, perfume & aftershave is only allowed under some very strict conditions, including packaging rules and the requirement to present it in person at a Post Office counter so they can apply the special warning labels.
https://personal.help.royalmail.com/app ... il/a_id/96
Watches
Batteries also come under the Dangerous Goods Act (see above). Obviously not all watches are powered by batteries, but in practice Royal Mail seem to stop and examine all watches going overseas before allowing those that pass the rules to carry on with their journey.
Tracking
Your parcel stopped at Langley on the 21st, which is consistent with RM stopping the parcel for examination for the reasons above.

Re: Item received at Langley HWDC
An item I sent to Canada had been at Langley for a month now - with no opportunity to speak to anyone or ask a question what do you do?? This is absolutely the worst customer service approach. I can’t think of any other company that is allowed this amount of obfuscation and secrecy - if the parcel is lost or broken fine! Just let me know ffs
