So,in theory, 6pm finishes on a Saturday night in the middle of winter,could easily be 8pm by the time you’re all sorted,had a shower etc. Absolutely knackered & straight to bed,all ready for a busy Sunday back on the coalface

This is the grim reality we are facing?

In theory I think a lot of us will just look for another job, for most of us it's just bearable because the hours suit us and the pay's OK if boosted by o/t & SA, plus we don't have to work Saturday afternoons nor Sunday's. Even our sick pay entitlement will most likely be inferior than a shelf fillers at Tesco etc.

I’m a 20yr man & like you,already exploring other avenues.

Crazy thing is,when all said & done,on the whole,I still like the job as it currently is,despite it being a lot worse than when I first started.

Just not looking forward to ‘starting again’ in my 50s

Makes no sense to have us stuck in school and evening rush hour traffic. Our rounds would take longer when they want them to be shorter. What time will they bank when we are late back after being stuck in traffic or getting slowed down by not being able to see where we are going or read addresses.

Very few would want to be working that late, especially on weekends. Surely they know this. Mass exodus would ensue. Nobody will want to do an exhausting job late into Saturday and Sunday evenings at a time when people are getting cushy jobs working 4 days a week from home.

Perhaps the max exodus is planned then Simon's can go back to OFCOM and say RM can't meet the USO as half his posties have quit!

If we do have to work until the DO's cleared what happens on Mother's & Father's Day as anybody allocated to work those days may out until midnight trying to clear the Moonpig cards etc

Ditch the first class letter obligation (through ofcom) and increase the amount of parcels moved through the LATs and it's pretty much job done.

Both are things that the CWU would normally fight.
But not if the alternative was moving deliveries by 3hrs.

We used to delivery in the dark when I started even on scary council estates. They gave us a torch and it doesn't take too much of a stretch of the imagination to see that RM could very well give out head torches to keep both hands free and cover themselves with health and safety.

Lets face it it's not like there aren't any street lights these days in a vast majority of areas that get delivered to and other courier can be out till 10pm which I doubt RM would even consider, 6-7pm is the latest they'd probably try for with a compromise on the horizon at about a 5pm finish (my thoughts).

They obviously know how other courier companies work in regards to setting up duties and different start/finish times for fulltime and part time staff and they are going after the very same way of working because it's cheaper than their current methods.

Walking the streets after dark at night is far more dangerous than in the morning, factor in fatigue, pubs being open, kids being around, junkies and predators of all kind and you have a nasty environment for anyone to work in.

I'm a guy and it worries me, if I was female and the business genuinely goes down this route I would probably jack it in rather than put myself at such a high level of risk.

It's not the same as working in the morning and it's not the same as multi-drop courier work. It's walking in and out of dark alleyways, blocks of flats, poorly lit lanes and remote areas at exactly the time most assaults happen.

Trivialising that risk is the kind of thing Simon who knows f**k all about the job likes to do.
We shouldn't.
