RMCtv : Later starts - working in the dark - picking kids up from school
Accelerating our Green agenda – Moving later start times by up to 3 hours, looking at longer outdoor delivery spans. This supports our partial withdrawal from mainland air network in favour of rail/road and builds in flexibility to our pipeline to attract a better customer proposition
The Proposal
There are 2 elements:
• We propose adding up to 3 hours to the network window which will be enabled through later start times.
• Delivery Spans: we want to explore options to optimise and standardise outdoor spans across the delivery operation.
We would like to work with you to identify how later start times and longer spans could work across the operation (e.g., duty sets), including how we could accommodate personal and family commitments using our existing family friendly policies.
Reason for the proposal
We need to develop a flexible network to secure growth and jobs for future generations. This proposal helps us to build a Network for Future Generations.
Environment:
• We have a responsibility as the UK’s Universal Service Provider to lead the way on environment and sustainability. We want to reduce our reliance on domestic flights, not just because want to grow and air has limited capacity for parcels, but because we have a responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint for the environmental impact on our nation. A key strategic objective is to lead on Co2 and achieve an industry leading 50g Co2 per parcel. Air is 6x Co2 impact per York transported compared to Rail and Road.
• This proposal supports our push for a greener operation, including a potential partial withdrawal from mainland air network in favour of rail/road and builds in flexibility to our pipeline to deliver a better customer proposition.
Network for growth:
• We need to develop a flexible network to secure growth and jobs for future generations. This proposal helps us to build a Network for Future Generations.
• The parcel market is moving towards next day. In Royal Mail we are seeing Next day parcels growing at 50-60-% per year. This leads to constraints in the Airnetwork capacity. We need a pipeline solution that removes the constraints to support growth. Other UK parcel carriers do not utilise Air to connect Parcels around the UK. We need to align our pipeline design to compete for growth.
• Air is 8x the cost and 13x Quality loss per York transported compared to Rail and Road.
• We are unable to meet peak day and Q3 T24 network demand due to these constraints. Our performance in Q3 impacts on our ability to retain and grow customers. The cost of LAT delivery is higher than core and lower quality.
• We also need further enablers to plant improvement, inward Automation, network, and local distribution networks. A wider network window will support this.
Flexible and agile network:
• Options to expand Air to meet the growth challenges do not exist in the marketplace to meet our growth aspirations.
• Potential Air service costs by 2027/28 at aspirations least £40m per year, up to £0.5b over 10 years (plus expansion of Property/Screening)
• There are major supply constraints in Freight Aircraft availability.
• Road and Rail provide more flexible and agile options to increase capacity and capability across the year.
• Planning, Scheduling and Workflow all become more efficient
• Potential to reduce use of “Sprinter” van - currently used where there is insufficient time to use an HGV (which are much more environmentally friendly).
• Without an agile network we can’t compete for growth.

So,in theory, 6pm finishes on a Saturday night in the middle of winter,could easily be 8pm by the time you’re all sorted,had a shower etc. Absolutely knackered & straight to bed,all ready for a busy Sunday back on the coalface

as sound bites in press releases and videos from RM Ivory Towers but will ensure utter confusion and plummeting morale in delivery offices
around the country.

No amount of promises to look at circumstances of individuals etc will mean anything, staff will literally be out of a job.

In theory I think a lot of us will just look for another job, for most of us it's just bearable because the hours suit us and the pay's OK if boosted by o/t & SA, plus we don't have to work Saturday afternoons nor Sunday's.
