The postmaster informs me they get 4p per item for typing the address into the system.
I often post 80+ items (small and large letters) at a time and he routinely puts these to one side so he can do this. I stress to him that i want these going out the same day (i paid first class) and he assures me they will.
I'm not particularly happy with this arrangement. I feel they are safe when in the sack and out the way. Sitting on a chair next to him while he serves other customers one could easily slip on to floor or under a desk. Secondly, it's a busy PO and he may be tempted to leave some if the collection postie arrives and he hasn't finished typing them into the system.
Lastly, it seems a lot of effort for £3.00. He could be making a mailing list to sell on or offer similar goods himself to my customers? He's already tried to sell me envelopes at a cheaper rate then i buy them so he's always looking to make money on the side. I wonder why it's just my mail that's being put to one side and why he doesn't just go through all the mail sacks?

Re: My mail being put to one side in Post Office
What do you mean he has to type them into 'the system'? If you're asking for a proof of postage or he's having
to print off barcoded postage then I can understand that. If you're not then I'm not sure why he's doing that,
why not just put all your items in a post box if they'll fit?
I doubt that he's trying to create a mailing list of distant customers to try and sell stuff to or sell on. Perfectly
legit methods are available to companies to obtain mailing lists e.g publicly available electoral roll.
If he does try to sell you stuff it's hardly 'on the side' - he's just trying to make a go of it the same as you are.
Ever been in WH Smith to buy a newspaper and they try to flog you a bar of chocolate at the till? You're lucky
he's not tried to sell you broadband or holiday insurance.

Re: My mail being put to one side in Post Office
If it’s as busy as you say then maybe he is trying to keep the queue down by serving customers and then complete your 80 items in a quiet period. This is quite normal from my experience and some post offices have notices stating a limit in the number of items one person can post in busy periods.
