Item stuck at HWDC Langley for 6 weeks - is this a record?

Post by Mr Rusty »

Hi there,
I have a package sent from the USA that was last scanned on 2nd April 'departed Heathrow' and hasn't moved since - I understand there are delays at HWDC Langley, but 6 weeks seems a long time - is this within the usual time frame?
Any feedback or help tracing it would be much appreciated.

6 weeks would be excessive - even during Covid - USPS scan them as they enter Customs and you get the status you posted. Unfortunately, it appears not to have entered the Royal Mails system.

USPS are still suffering delays and slowdowns in their own system so I would get the sender to contact them.

Many thanks for the prompt reply, much appreciated.

The sender has already contacted USPS but they won't help due to the service used (even though there is a tracking number) - their last scan says the package has 'departed a transfer airport in Heathrow, London United Kingdom' (incoming) so I presume that means it's at Langley. Could it still be with USPS in this country?

The item (trading cards) is going to a PO Box address, so I told the sender to use a regular service rather than priority because priority services are handed to ParcelForce on arrival in the UK and they won't deliver to PO Boxes, I foolishly presumed it would be the same level of service, just take longer.

As you say it hasn't show up on the Royal Mail system yet - any help at all would be very much appreciated.

No it's definitely not in the USPS system as that last scan is the last scan they do before handing it over to Customs.

Trading cards have caused problems in the past, genuine ones are fine but I think they take extra time sometimes to verify them as they did have a problem with fake ones. Hopefully, that's all it is and they'll eventually get out at some point.

My advice is for the sender to put in a claim with USPS, and you to put in a claim with the sender if they are a business and a claim with Royal Mail. Sometimes, although rarely, a claim seems to unstick an item. Its a last shot, but it is worth a try.

Strange that. We get priority items through the MC from the US, no idea what criteria they use when deciding whether to route it via RM or PF. If it's not a priority item then it'll likely next be scanned when delivery is attempted.

What is the tracking number, it might give a clue as to what service was used by the sender?

Hi there,

Many thanks for your help and additional information.

To add a little more background re. the trading card thing - the sender is an individual sending some cards over to me via my PO Box for signing & sketching (my day job is as an illustrator for such things) - once done I'll be sending them back. They're what are known as 'artist proof' cards with blank backs so if the package was opened they might appear unusual to the untrained eye but the nominal value would surely mean that wouldn't ring any alarm bells?

Last time he sent them USPS Priority Mail International and the package was handed to Parcelforce when it arrived over here, so to avoid the same thing happening again on my recommendation he sent them as a First Class International Package, customs declaration '9 cards handwritten' value $20, tracking number LH167242117US.

He's tried instigating a claim to unstick things (this has occasionally worked for me in the past) but was told no claims were accepted with this service.

P.S. If anyone does have the definitive answer about which services from the US go to RM and which to PF it would be a great help as no one at my local depot or Post Office (or anyone that's asked on my behalf in the US) seems to know.

Thanks in advance for your time.
