Pegasus

Post by fmjomega »

I know I know, this is long but please do reply if you have any information.

Ok so our office has started on the implementation of pegasus, :nana the route system to make all rounds equal and to also make all rounds 3 hours 30 minutes to the closest minute. :funneh

Does anyone have any information on this at all as it is now in the hands or processors of a computer and we are waiting on the outcome, but having looked at the first 2 rounds it threw out to be tested we know from previous walk tests for it to be on a rough guess about 45 minutes over, nopw I am not a slow postman but I don't run my round but even I cannot achieve the target set by pegasus and am now thinking that some of our older guys will die on the job. Its just my concern is that RM have set the bench mark of average speed at 6mph we have been informed now take into account the fact that you come to a complete stop every time you stop at a door, gate or old lady needing a hand this emans you have to go faster than 6mph to make up for it, doesnt sound alot does it. I know of someone that used a little device that records where you have been then you can check your average speed and distance travelled by going on the net the average speed bearing in mind this guy is FAST he achieved and average of 4.5mph and that includes all his cycling( he cannot turn of the device for that) and he is a cyclist in his spare time. :cuppa

It was brought to our office as some of our rounds are 2 hour deliveries and some are 5 hour deliveries and after 3 years of requests they are finally doing something about it. :Boo hoo!

all depends on what figures rm has used to work out your office
there are nationally agreed figures with the cwu and your area rep should of by now had the training to check up on these
if not contact cwu asap and see whats going on
we have had our office done and we have 1 more postie now so if used correctly it should make all walks equal

Arrh yes pegasus rears it's ugly head once again how a can a computer take account of walk speed for a computer can do any calculaton far quicker than any human but a computer cannot walk? or fill out a dib card in the rain or close gate's at the wrath of some customers nor can it carry a heavy weight or go up step's or up hills. Computers do not have to read while walking so why should we nor do they have to look out for dog's or people up to no good FOR I SAY IT'S ABOUT TIME PEGASUS HAD IT'S WINGS CLIPPED AND THE MANAGMENT FOUND ANOTHER TOY TO PLAY WITH!.

Oddly enough I would be an advocate of geo-route as Pegasus has evolved into. It is all about how well the information is fed into the computer.
A calculator is a simple computer, if you insert the wrong figures you will get a wrong answer. And so you will with Pegasus. The system calculates the walk using the data input, which should produce an accurate result.

BUT and it is a big but, I wonder if there has been enough research into the variables that exist. Terrain, weather, property type and not least and one that I think is very important, drop frequency. Two deliveries can have similar terrain, similar number of drops but one gets 50% more mail than another. Now I have heard that there was supposed to be a mail count for each delivery and presumably that too would form part of the input.

In our office one of our old managers did the geo route and I knew her quite well and she readily admitted that geo route was really a starting point and not the end result and that the deliveries would need to be "tweaked". There does seem to be an unhealthy urgency in getting these up and running in order to form part of the 1.5% increase and £400 lump sum, rather than getting it right.

Just to let you guys know that there is NO National Agreement regarding Pegusus and Geo route.Bob Gibson says he will eventually get one but for now we have to go by local agreements!!!Pegusus for instance in our area is being run at 4mph with a 85% call rate.Royal Mail also refuse to sign up to a term of reference regarding these tools.Something to hide Royal Mail!!

Georoute

Post by apple »

Georoute, have gone through it in our office, be aware although management will tell you it is not a cost cutting exercise, it bloody well is! loss of hours from the office will happen, after being told time and again "yes it's a computer we will be back to tweak it" never seen em since!

as for balancing rounds ha ha!! you cannot get all rounds equal as you are bound to have some left over after they have added bits, it will take rounds and rip them up and have you going places that make no sense, in our office the miss sorts are horrendous because nearly all the rounds have been added to, merged or bits put onto something that makes no sense

spent over 2 hours with the georoute guy getting my frame labels right, came back all wrong! spent another 2 hours still came back wrong! so me and one of the DIMS that is ok have bodged the frame cutting labels up and using highlight pens so now at least it walks how you pull it out

the thing to do is like the campaign says do your job properly and they cannot touch you! best bit to come though is that georoute says what is achievable so if new builds go up then they have to re do the duty, ye like they are going to do that!

we got a resign in our office as well, they were not impressed, "nowhere else has done it" this in our office was a bigger change than under SDD

so any advice, take your time, do not rush, do your job properly, no short cuts, kiss goodbye to job and finish and get used to working all your hours

i really think were all doomed!

My delivery has been done on pegasus before i think mark 1 and they put about 160+ houses on my walk the only thing is the work load is mad i deliver in a mixed area of commuters, ederley and students but its quiet an affluent area so gets shed loads and that is the problem it was a 3.5 hr delivery but since SDD and pegasus mark 1 it now takes upto 4.5-5 hrs to do depending on what day of the week it is, it never has a truley light load on it what im worried about now is that when they do all this mucking around will it be made worse or will it stay the same, the management is in a big rush to get it all in and my walk is not one of the worst there are a few in the same boat.

Look forward to Gio-route implementation then. We had it done early last year and yes there are problems which you should look out for. I will list them. But on ours the really big walks actually came out of it better with some being taken off them. Also it works very well in high density housing areas like council estates but the problems we found were as follow:

1. Does not recognise rear/side door access - it thinks every address you go to the front door.
2. It cannot tell what the terrain is like. My delivery (which I do my own way) started at the bottom of a very steep hill.
3. It cannot cope with low density "posh/middle class" housing areas, especially those with long winding drives. Some of our walks it said 3hrs 20 mins and it actually takes 4.5hrs. They are now changing them as it was costing them a fortune in docket.
4. It tries to bet you do back the craziest roads. One of our walks came out with postie zig zagging down a major A road.
5. It takes no account of the workload - ie affluent areas are treated as though they have the same call rate and weights as less affluent areas.
6. Biggest thing to watch out for is make sure that the walking speed and call rates are adjusted for local conditions. Both of these parameters can be set as required but to get a fair balance you will need the Union rep and Management to come to an understanding. Also try to get the walk time set at 3.20 as this will give some flexibility for rearranging the walks. IE is there any point in 2 posties going down 1 small road just because Gio-route was worked out at exactaly 3.30.

My only concern is that I have both council estates and middle class areas on my round, the delivery during the week is roughly 4 hours but that is on one of those rare days. I use a van on my round and have the large packets to deliver aswell so these are added into my duty time on the ground.
The round next to me in the office on average gets 2 trays of coded letters per day as opposed to my 4/5 and after showing concern about the geo route was told by the management that it would be looked at after the geo route has had its say to take into account the number of calls.
I read this topic last night and voiced a couple of concerns to line manager and DOM this morning I didnt say where I found out the info other than on the net, and one comment made was, what happens in other offices won't happen here we have been planning this for 2 years now and everything is in place to make it work.

So I asked what is our call % and speed as I wasn't quite sure if it was nationally or locally agreed, the response was.....
"It is a national agreement and the figures have been studied across the nation in variable offices so that any problems that may have been overlooked would have been ironed out before we implement them. The speed we have been advised by the union is 4.5MPH and the call% is 87% this has been done in every office and has been successful across the board."

Now excuse me while i drop down dead from laughing to hard but thought i would just show you the response I got so you too stood a chance of laughing so hard ur ringpiece prolapses, your stomach aches and you wet yourself. I was going to add to my managers comments to his face and say.... :cfo but thought i better not today too much hassle for a weekend.

And to answer the question about finishing I now work to my finish time, I was fed up of being on the streets till 5 at night and missing out having a life so have told the management from now on I will not go past my time full stop, to which I was told that by doind so I am jeopardising my standing as we have nationally agred to be more flexible and help out when it is needed. I then asked if this flexibilty works both ways so that if i stay on till 5 everyday on a saturday to I just not come in as I have clocked up 2 hours a day for 4 days which means I am owed 8 hours. The manager walked off after the question so not sure what his reply is to that. I am sorry for those who are into claming docket or for those that need docket to live comfortably but I am fed up with being a pack horse.
