Hello. I live in a development where there are two buildings. The larger building faces onto the road and provides access to a car park via electronic gates that are opened by means of a fob. The car park can also be accessed from another road via a side gate by entering a code on a keypad. My much smaller building is situated within the secured car park and the post boxes for our building are attached to our building. There is no obvious way to gain access to our building from outside.. Our usual postman has been given the code to the keypad on the side gate so that for the most part our post does get delivered safely, but if we get a replacement postman it has been known for post to be left in the communal entryway of the front building or to go astray. Other types of deliveries can be hit or miss. They’re usually fine if delivery instructions, including the code for the keypad, can be provided up front, or if when the delivery person arrives someone has opened the gates. At other times deliveries are just left in the front building or not delivered at all.
This seems like a very unsatisfactory state of affairs to me. And it is happening just because the management company do not seem to have any interest in putting some process in place, such as a labelled and timed trades button on the gates, that would allow anyone making deliveries easy access to our building during delivery hours. It has been requested that they do something like this but nothing happens. I guess this is because the majority of residents live in the front building and don’t experience these issues.
I would obviously prefer that anyone who has to make deliveries here should be able to complete the job as quickly and as easily as possible, but if the management company aren’t willing to do anything about it then I don’t know if there is anything I can do. Apart from handing out the code to the side gate to anyone who may need access to our building. Which I would rather not do.
Is it legal to restrict access to a building in this way?
