Just over two years for me but hoping not to make it three years in the company
Can I have your job?
Don’t mean to cause offence or anything pal but I doubt you would last a week.
No offence taken, but in the first week i would try to clear my frame everyday. If that meant 2, 3, 4 or more four hours of unpaid overtime each day then so be it.
You would work 4 hours unpaid on top of your normal hours do you understand how exhausting that would be you wouldnt last the second week.
richietns, my gripe is not with you and whilst this may appear bolshy, i can assure you its more the frustration of long term unemployment and the restrictions that puts on ones life.
So in answering your question, yes to be honest i think i do. I;ve often stood bent over in a field picking fruit and vegetables and manual carrying crates full of produce and stacking them on a trailer for 8 to 10 hrs a day. Its one of the hardest jobs ive come across and for as little £3 per hour, its not great work. - Yes its exploitation but the organisers of this activity are extremely proficient and know how the system works and to discuss the rights and wrongs and all that cash in hand for unskilled labour entails is another big subject.
Ive been out labouring with builders many a time and before now I've mixed 10+ tons of concrete up by hand in a day before, shoveling it in a mixer and barrowing it to where they are pouring the screed. Ive delivered over 2500 phone books this summer for way below minimum wage by the time you account for fuel etc. Ive cleaned toilets and many other things. All im saying is that having an Msc and Postgraduate education counts for very little. Employers see your age and your in the over the hill box before you even get an interview.
Yes your job is hard and if what I read here RM management are extremely poor but your lucky you have a job and can put food on the table regularly and can pay bills on time. Many of us unfortunately can only dream of that.
I might be over 50 but im certainly not out and im not lazy. All im looking for is an opportunity to work. Is it really too much in the 21st century to ask to feel like you can do a decent days work and have integrity and the sense of self worth?
