I have recently made a purchase from china and am waiting for it to arrive in the uk, track-chinapost.com says it reached langley on the 31st, it is now the 6th and there hasn't been any movement and the royalmail website says this "This item is now leaving the originating country. More information will be available when it arrives in the UK." Is this normal, and does anyone know how long its expected to be.

Yes it is normal and no, nobody knows how long it will be because customs clearance time are variable. See other posts on here.
