International tracked letter damaged

Post by hellogoodbye »

I'm interested to know what would happen to a letter sent from the UK to Canada by International tracked mail that was damaged in transit. Would Royal Mail return It to the sender for damage with a letter explaining this? Recently I was expecting a standard letter envelope with passport photos in the mail from the UK to Canada and the sender lost the receipt to track this and I wasn't certain they actually sent it. 2 weeks later they said that Royal Mail returned the letter to them as it was damaged. Just wondering if it was actually sent!

Canadian customs are amongst the strictest in the world. I believe that if either the senders address (and any applicable customs declaration) are damaged or missing from the front of the item, they'll reject it. Heard once that they literally photograph every package that enters Canada, no idea if that's actually true

There is no hard and fast rule, it would depend on both what the damage was and where it happened, to varying degrees.

But as a rule of thumb if one address was readable, and the other wasn't then it would be sent on to that address whichever it was.
