Half mast

Bristol Mail Centre has a flag pole. Could be unusual in mail centres across United Kingdom. I was suprised to see that the Union Flag (not always flying) but often seen, was flying at half mast today. Many hundreds of people traveling along A38 would have seen that from their cars. Well done Royal Mail.

The rule for MC's is to fly the Union Flag on the national flag flying days and at all other times the red Royal Mail flag should be flown.

Up until 2012 you needed permission to fly the Union Flag but the law was changed so unlikely to be anyone in power stopping it, more likely a cost thing, they get damaged and faded by the weather quite quickly if they're up all the time and they're not cheap to replace.

A little culturally insensitive there NWpostie - Aiden is based in Northern Ireland he makes no secret of that. Flags, on both sides, have huge connotations and a lot of history behind them. Just as your position about the Union flag is coloured by your experience, his position is coloured by his and both positions are equally valid, but context is important.

Some prefer to respect more ethereal things like love, decency or life itself.
Some try a little of both.

Each to their own but one thing about respecting any national flag is that you can't pick and choose the history it represents, good or bad by saluting it you're endorsing both.

Ridiculous comparisons.
We're talking about flags in every day use around the world usually for the most mundane of reasons.
To cite the flags/emblems of historical evil regimes as an example is merely facile.

In Northern Ireland where terrorist groups and violent protestors on both sides use the flags of both nations to reinforce their perceived "allegiance", I suggest that there is a moral judgement that can be opined.

That's why I mentioned context, both flags have connotations for both sides whether we agree with them or not it's not something that should be ignored, to do so in the province would be naive and counterproductive.

In the end all I was trying to point out that Aiden has a different opinion about flying a flag, and I tried to point out why.

The more untenable and ridiculous his position becomes the more entrenched he becomes.

He can't even see that whether a regime is described as evil kind of depends on whether you're carrying the flag or being chased down the street by it.
