Re: Parcel size for van duties.
It certainly would be tempting if things improve for these other companies, parcel delivery alone is much easier and they all seem to have decent vans, in our place at the moment it’s a fight to get a van and a pda and the vans are ancient and filthy

How long till we get Transit sized vans to do these dedicated parcel runs, no way we are going to fit it all in a Bipper..

Will we be able to manage as we are if lots of the big stuff is taken off us, dedicated van duties will definitely need to be bigger though

It'll probably be Mercedes Sprinter vans, like what get used for some airmail runs to-from MCs2yearpostie wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 15:43How long till we get Transit sized vans to do these dedicated parcel runs, no way we are going to fit it all in a Bipper..

It's actually Peugeot Expert vans that are replacing the Bipper and the Partner.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 20:43It'll probably be Mercedes Sprinter vans, like what get used for some airmail runs to-from MCs2yearpostie wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 15:43How long till we get Transit sized vans to do these dedicated parcel runs, no way we are going to fit it all in a Bipper..
We have around 60 vans and over the past two years around 20 of the smaller vans have been replaced by the transit sized Expert. They're good vans with a large load space and on paper three front seats although in practice it would have to be a couple of very thin people in the passenger seats to fit three in.

Not 100% sure that Peugeot Expert vans will be big enough once you've got a few large items like microwaves, kids car seats, lawn mowers, etc in themWoody Guthrie wrote: ↑08 Mar 2021, 06:23It's actually Peugeot Expert vans that are replacing the Bipper and the Partner.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 20:43It'll probably be Mercedes Sprinter vans, like what get used for some airmail runs to-from MCs2yearpostie wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 15:43How long till we get Transit sized vans to do these dedicated parcel runs, no way we are going to fit it all in a Bipper..

Items that size are relatively rare.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑08 Mar 2021, 07:07Not 100% sure that Peugeot Expert vans will be big enough once you've got a few large items like microwaves, kids car seats, lawn mowers, etc in themWoody Guthrie wrote: ↑08 Mar 2021, 06:23It's actually Peugeot Expert vans that are replacing the Bipper and the Partner.SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 20:43It'll probably be Mercedes Sprinter vans, like what get used for some airmail runs to-from MCs2yearpostie wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 15:43How long till we get Transit sized vans to do these dedicated parcel runs, no way we are going to fit it all in a Bipper..

If you've ever delivered parcels in an urban area you'll know that too large a vehicle is a liability.
Parcelforce will still handle the bulk of the big stuff.

If Mercedes Sprinter vans or another manufacturer's equivalent are a liability then why does every courier and PF use them then in an urban area?Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑08 Mar 2021, 07:43If you've ever delivered parcels in an urban area you'll know that too large a vehicle is a liability.

A) They have far larger areas to cover.
B) They don't have a division of their company dedicated to delivering larger items.

Of course it is, you're wandering into territory you don't know anything about SP.
The new parcel duties will cover at most about 5 duties all next to each other. You're unlikely to be more than 10 miles away from the DO at the furthest point.
My Parcelforce guy starts 25 miles away and covers around 150 miles a day delivering anything from mattresses to decking.

The Peugeot Expert vans being delivered to us now are longer than the ones we've had for the last couple of years. They are easy to tell apart as they have the new livery.

Very True Woody. How Bizarre then when I'm stood on the doorstep with the Parcel Force Guy .... I've got a set of Curtain Rails , or something, in a bloody 6ft long box ... He's got a shoe boxed sized parcel.Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 10:44When I started everything was a packet.
Parcels were what Parcelforce delivered.
We discussed the irony whilst waiting for the customer .... who wasn't in. Then I learnt something else, Parcel Force aren't allowed to leave parcels (they docket everything)
This was time ago so I hope their Bosses have seen the error of their ways?

Too True SugarSugar wrote: ↑07 Mar 2021, 12:20It's been on the cards for sometime now that the company are wanting to go down the route of less people doing more work by trying to take greater control, via technology, of how each duty looks on a day to day basis. Unfortunately most OPG's bury their heads in the sand and think it'll not happen to them or just carry on regardless running around like headless chickens in a vain effort to finish early.
OPG's really are their own worst enemies and the company exploits this time and time again.
It's a constant struggle to try and get staff to start on time, take their meal breaks and stand up to the DOM and tell him they've No Time to lapse.
