Does it matter if the postcode has a space in it or not?

For example NE1 4XY or NE14XY?

The poster has not put a space in between and i am wondering if it matters at all or if your machines read all postcodes regardless?

No, it does not matter. If the machine can't read the address it is rejected and passed automatically to our colleagues in MDeC, who decipher the address and then tell the machine the correct address. An invisible barcode is then printed on to the item to inform the machines further down the line.

If the post code is together will it still automatically process so it smoothly arrives without delays?

It will get there, don't worry.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

If it's a letter that's machine-processed, yes. Most parcels are still manually sorted, however, and missing spaces are one of the more common causes of missorts; even then, that's not going to cause more than a day or so's delay while it goes to the wrong office, they realise it shouldn't be there, and send it back up to go to the right office.

(In the specific case quoted, that's unlikely to happen because NE14 happens not to be an existing postcode district, so there's no wrong office that it might easily get sent to. But in the general case, missing spaces can definitely cause delay.)
