it was a sackable offence years ago & certainly now in central lancs , depends if someone's rang RM CS , they'd pull posties on bag checks or get them on SD's and replace the full timers with AG's .saru wrote:My motto is CYB (cover your back) at all times! I don't doorstep or sign for anything now unless there's a note on the bench from the customer saying it's OK.
Re: sacking - it's a strong possibility. Depends on your DOM & your colleagues record. It may well depend on the value of the item too. If RM have to shell out loads of compo, they may well be less inclined to be lenient.
I hope it all goes OK for her.

If that'as the case she must make that point at her conduct interview. If somebody else has done that and not been disciplined it would be seen as unfair to discipline her. That is natural justice and in any case there is legal precedent around this; the case of Hadjiannou v Coral Casinos at the Employment Appeals Tribunal.
Never, ever sign for items; its seen as a failure to safeguard the mail and its just not risking your job over.

Although Royal Mail consider this type of offence quite serious with regards to mails integrity, it would be a very extreme measure to sack someone for it. Saying that, things will also depend on her current record, because, if for instance, she has done something of this naturs before, then management will take quite a dim view of this. On the other hand, if her record is clear, or even if she had an offence of a different nature to this one, then it would be a hateful vindictive manager that would dismiss her.
Do not attempt to justify the actions of the individual signing herself by using the argument that others do it. Its against policy and should not happen. The answer is, an apology and it won't happen again. (Thats if the proof is there)
I wish her good luck, and I hope this advice helps in some way.
