Some of us aren't on a living wage.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

That's the point, very few people would.
Which is why we're not on minimum wage.
Nothing to do with fighting.

this is a company that thinks we are over paid and underworked. if we hadn't been at the gates so many times we would have none of the conditions we have. and we have because we've be at the gates so many times.

It will also have been a difference mix of mail types. Back then it would have been nearly all letters and flats with the odd packet, now there's way more packets and a lot of stuff that has to be scanned.Woody Guthrie wrote:Workload was different in those days, easier in some ways, harder in others but work is work.

They were quoted as saying it.. either crozier or leighton if I remember...trying to impose a pay freeze and saying we were paid too much as it is and not as efficient as our competitorsWoody Guthrie wrote:Do you think a business will ever tell you that you're overworked and underpaid davey?daveyeff wrote:this is a company that thinks we are over paid and underworked.

Until about 12 months ago offices that had recruitment problems would advertise full time jobs to temp people in and to get them to stay, it wasn’t many offices just offices in large well off areas. Looks like that’s gone out the window now as well.Murdoch wrote:I had never considered a retention issue, do many offices find it hard to retain employees? I guess this varies hugely from area to area.

In some areas there is something called RRIS payment which if I remember correctly stands for Recruitment and Retention Incentive Supplement.
At the end of the day this business has a relatively high turnover of staff especially in the first 6 months of employment. That's with a relatively high rate of pay on entry. You can imagine what it would be like on minimum wage.

1 hour off the working week is no help if you you don't get 1 hour off the workload.

From what I've observed, many people leave very quickly after joining because they find out how poorly managed Royal Mail is. They might have been given a 12 hour contract, but then are confused why they are on the rota every week for 38 hours anytime from 6am - 16:00 Monday to Saturday.Woody Guthrie wrote:In some areas there is something called RRIS payment which if I remember correctly stands for Recruitment and Retention Incentive Supplement.

Many companies in the UK are dysfunctional, but Royal Mail is exceptionally strange. This is now a typical advert:
Part time 25:00 hours per week
Working between the hours of 07:00 and 19:00
Five days across Monday to Saturday
One day off during the week (rotational day off)
What they don't mention is that, you won't get a rotational day off (it will be completely random). And you'll get the rota maybe on the Saturday before the week starts. So you'll literally need to remain free from 7:00 - 19:00 Monday to Saturday every week, because they'll expect you to work those 25 hours, anytime within that period, that suits them. Actually, no you'll be on the rota for at least 38 hours, without being asked if you want the extra every week. And if you raise this as an issue, you'll need to be prepared to raise it every single week.
If you have literally any other commitments, you're screwed if you get a job with Royal Mail.

Another thing wrong with the job adverts is that it states that you will be 'walking for upto 6 hours a day'. This contradicts the fact that the job is only advertised as 5 hours a day and doesn't even factor in any indoor work or a break.
