Dutch Postal Operator Calls For Liberalisation Delay
03 December 2007 by Mark White

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The intruduction of a minimum wage for postal workers in Germany is creating waves in neighbouring holland. TNT has asked for a delay in the Dutch postal deregulation agenda as it says the increased costs it will now face in Germany will have serious implications in terms of its ability to be ready for deregulation on its home turf.

TNT argues that it now faces an unlevel playing field and is calling for an emergency break whilst it rethinks its plans. The minimum postal wage was agreed in Germany after Deutshe Poste complained that competitors threatened their ability to compete through paying lower wages to employees.

The UK still relies on an existing minimum wage across all sectors but the disparity in wage levels for postal workers across Europe could have implications for all postal providers looking to compete with operators in other countries. With profit levels dependent on running costs, a big part of which is wages, the problem could extend to other countries and make postal liberalisation more difficult to achieve. Postal Liberalisation has already been delayed by up to five years in some European countries.

I do not see them complaining in the uk,perhaps they do not mind a unlevel playing field when it goes in their favour.

Consignia

Post by F0zziebear »

RM tried this under Consignia, and got it's fingers burn't. Mainly because liberlaisation hadn't happened and they spent their surplus cash on small companies. RM also had no history of buying and merging businesses.

Leighton has made it clear that RM has no strategic intention to do this. I think his thinking is to get their own house in order, privatise and then consider foreign investment. You shouldn't be investing overseas until your own backyard is secure. BT has managed to do this, so it's not such a crazy plan.

It should also be pointed out that whilst TNT are securing considerable volumes in this country they are not making considerable profit margins and neither is Businesspost or DHL. It's a myth that they are making lots of money, the only winners so far have been large customers.

I expect once the modernisation programme is complete RM will be sold off, or put into a partnership situation.

WOW! I can't wait, FOzz. What a great day that'll be, postal workers will be better paid, their final salary pensions secured, and Joe public will have a
reliable service second to none.

Strange thing, I just cannot seem to get excited at the machinations of so-called businessmen, of whom, I would rather run a marathon a day, then have them arrange the xmas piss-up for our office. :Very Happy

Well, you might get shot, but at least it won't be because someone thinks you're the wrong religion.
