Hi , a friend of mine in Spain has sent me some items that belonged to my deceased girlfriend. These are not expensive but of sentimental value.
They were posted on the a 13th May and tracked up until 16th the last update said ‘leaving overseas’ since then no updates.
I phoned the number on the website but no one was able to give any further information .
I guess all I really want to know is would Coronavirus make the delay this long ? Why no more tracking up dates ? And realistically is my parcel lost ?
Any advice would be greatly received.
Kind regards
Jon

It appears to be in customs. Most mail carriers don’t track the item into a country, and customs don’t do any tracking, so the next scan will be when it is handed over to Royal Mail.
Delays of that length, or longer, are common at the moment.

What i dont understand is, dont the couriers themselves i.e Royal Mail conduct the customs search not HMRC..so I dont know why they are having trouble stuck being scanned at least once for over 1-2 weeks.Snaggletooth wrote:It appears to be in customs. Customs do their own checks, and Royal Mail and other couriers do safety checks. Royal Mail has no authority to decide if something requires VAT or if it falls under another section that customs deal with. The safety check Royal Mail and other couriers will normally happen just before the "Item is leaving the originating country" scan

This is what an HMRC customs advisor said to me, as I was enquiring whether or not my parcels was stuck in customs and they blatantly said the holdup is from the courier (royal mail). While, Royal Mail says either contact the sender or it is stuck in customs. The sender says it has left the country, it's down to the destination country to track where it is. Then HMRC says it's royal mail that does the customs clearance. I think that explains why my mail from Germany came so quickly because the couriers themselves do the customs check or a part of it (it was a private courier DHL). And again I ordered a book from Germany a few days ago and it came today (Hermes).TrueBlueTerrier wrote:

This is what the HMRC advisor told me:
also isn't Langley HWDC aka. ROYAL MAIL Heathrow Worldwide Distribution Centre? When they say "stuck in customs", what they actually mean is that is going through the process as customs is a procedure not a place - couriers do the customs clearance themselves
no - the parcels come in to the uk and get assigned to a courier who then put the parcels through the customs process

Royal Mail doesn't have anything to do with customs clearance, someone at HMRC has got that wrongbyaakun wrote:Then HMRC says it's royal mail that does the customs clearance.
