Ok well Im even more confused.
I finished my round today at 1.30, and go to sign out but it says 'Duty finish time - 10.40'. So I go ask the only manager who was in at the time, why it says 10.40.. she says something about people on 30hour contracts have long and short days. Then she said I have to speak to the other manager who deals with pay, start/finish etc.
This is the first I've heard of long and short days.. I've been working from 6.50 till 1.30 everyday, since I started 3weeks ago.. this being my 4th week.
What is a short day? It would be impossible for me to finish my round by 10.40!!

Sounds typical of RM LH no idea what RH is doing and both not telling the fingers what they should be doing.

Hi Aaron mate,first things first,you work a 5day-30hour week correct.Find out what your times of attendance are for each day mon-sat,that will be shown on the signing on sheet and work to them times.If today you were say 06.00-11.00,that is a 5hour duty,no one can make you work past 11.00 if you dont wish to,if on the other hand you work till say 12.30,you then claim 1.30hours protracted overtime for completing your delivery.Management are trying to be clever with what they call longs and shorts.Short days would normally be Tuesdays and Saturdays when the workload is suposedly less,Mon,Wed ,Thurs and Fridays the long days when its busy,BUT REMEMBER ANY TIME YOU WORK OVER YOUR DUTY TIME THROUGH YOUR CHOICE YOU WILL BE PAID FOR AS LONG AS YOU COMPLETE THE DELIVERY.IF you dont wish to protract on your duty then tell you line manager or the dom A.S.A.P. and they will then have to resource it by other methods(Overtime for another postie in your office or bring in a casual)Hope thats helped a bit Aron

Yep, Im on a 5 Day - 30 hour contract.
It's really stupid, so today I should have claimed overtime from 10.40am-1.30pm + my meal break of 30mins? 3hrs 20mins in total??
Im going back into work later to speak to the manager who deals with it all.
My usual start time is 6.50am and finish time 1.30pm. So this is a normal week as follows:
Mon - 6.50 - 1.30
Tues - 6.50 - 1.30 - which Ive just found out should be 6.45-10.40 [short day]
Weds - DAY OFF
Thurs - 6.50 - 1.30

its becoming the trend to take the meal relief in my area before you go out, as many of our guys were simply putting on their OT docket "meal relief".
regardless of when you take the meal relief, make sure you take it, dont work for sod all. if it means you getting out late and not finishing, as long as you have told a manager before you go out to let them find some mad person to do it on OT or absorb it into another duty.

Aaron mate if you work right through untill 13.30 without a break then i would say yes claim 30 mins overtime ,but if this becomes a regular thing your dom (as the one in our office does) may tell you to take your break before you go out.which imho is not such a bad thing as its a long day to work nearley 7 hours without a break,another point have you a canteen?if yes it would be better to take your break when your ready to go out in the canteen and safeguard there job.

I sorted it out today, I think.
I get paid for the extra 40mins that I'm working each day. Which adds upto 2hrs 5mins [apparently].. as saturday is a short day.
Also the duty finish time saying 10.40am on Wednesdays is apparently a mistake.
Another thing I went to find out what dates I could book for holiday, the manager told me either the last week of this month or the first week of july, and that's it. Can I not book off both weeks?
He kept questioning me whether I was going to college/uni in september as Im on a temp contract that could be made permanent. He then went on to question me about what a-levels I took, what plans I have for the future, why I got a job as a postman and not going to college.. etc. I found this abit weird.. just told him at the moment I haven't really got any plans, but I don't know.
