hello,
An international tracked and signed parcel was sent from UK to Cyprus.
This is stuck at London AMU. It is a mobile phone and now I have noticed that there is a generic restriction on telecommunication equipment to Cyprus.
What happens to restricted items??
And same restrictions do not apply to courier services, since they confirmed that they would have delivered the phone.
Thx

The courier companies should be working to the same rules as Royal Mail, with the occasional exception. So either this is one of those exceptions (rare), the courier company was wrong about mobile phones, or “telecommunications equipment” is an old definition that doesn’t extend to mobile phones.

But the other problem is the battery. This has to be packed in a very specific way to meet the International Air Transport Association rules: must be in “rigid packaging” (a box), carry the senders name and address, there must only be one battery and that must be installed in the device etc. Did the sender check and follow all of the rules?

If the problem is with restrictions, expect it to be returned to the sender. If it is with the IATA rules then the parcel will probably be destroyed.

Thank you for the response Snaggletooth.

The box has both addresses on it, and the box is as came from the OEM, i.e. with the battery pre-installed in the devices.
I have checked with 3 different courier services (post incident) and all 3 would have been able to deliver such item.; hence not a problem with the package itself.
Hence I believe that the only issue for redirecting to AMU has to do with the restrictions. I do not suppose we have any indication of processing time? I mean I might be waiting weeks before I know.
Lastly, in the odd case of being destroyed, will that be updated on the tracking?

If the GLS service from the UK to Cyprus is routed via Germany then that's probably where the problem is as Germany doesn't allow lithium batteries in the post at all no matter how they are packed and whether or not the battery is installed in the device

but as a sender you check outgoing country and incoming country restrictions; you do not know which route the item will take and hence any intermediate restrictions, like Germany as you say.
It just does not sound logical to be the case, IMO.

I would to note query was premature, as item has been received in Cyprus and is going through its normal delivery route. Thx for the responses nonetheless.
