addressee not living at my address

Hi all

New poster here :wave
we moved to our current address 3 yrs go. Occasionally we are still getting letters addressed to the previous owner which we forward to him.
However at least 5-6 letters a week arrive addressed to people that do not live here at least not for the past 17 yr. I checked with the previous owner who replied he rarely got these letters
I always return them to sender, but I'm getting fed up at the amount of letters I weekly need to return and wonder why people are using my address?
I asked once at the post office what I can do, but apparently nothing can be done which I somehow understand.

A simple idea would be to put a note on your door.
"Mail for [YOUR NAME] only please."
That way, when the Postie comes, he will only put through the mail addressed to you

No he won`t, he will post all the mail with that address on.
Plus why should people know who lives at that address?

I`m in a similar situation, I kept sending back former tenant`s mail but I kept receiving it, now it goes straight into the bin.

So Janet, if a customer opens the door with a letter and says this person doesn't live here, what do you do?

It would be returned as refused because the postie had received a positive and personal instruction when the mail was handed over.

However, as anyone can put a note on a door Royal Mail does not accept this as enough evidence for the postie to act on.

Of course, once you get to know residents, you can always act on your own initiative if you want to take the risk.

If the person who lives at the address says he doesn`t know the name on the letter, of course I take it back and kill it off.
If it`s just a note on the door, I post everything as it can be an outdated note or someone`s joke...

Trueblue said it better than me :)

Find out which company/companies is sending you them, and write them a letter telling them to stop

Noticed recently that a series of adjoining addresses all got letters addressed to names that I knew had never been
residents of these houses. I queried this with a couple of the residents who obviously refused them. When I checked
the return PO Box address on the internet it was one of the notorious debt collection agencies who apparently
send out random 'You owe us....' letters in the hope that someone will pay up even though the debt is not theirs - outrageous.

thanks for your replies
I always RTS and tell the company that the person is not living here, but they keep on sending letters
I suppose these companies just throw the returned letters in the bin
I wouldn't leave a note outside with our names on it.
My postie is a star, when I see him, he'll take it back as refused

I guess we should have to put up and our RTS or in the bin it goes

I've noticed that since the recent GDPR rules came in last year, companies seem to be quicker at stopping
'junk' for RTS mail than they used to be. If you just bin it, they'll keep sending it.....

This happened to us several years ago, the biggest offender was virgin media. Didn't matter how many times I refused or RTS the letters, they kept coming. I wrote a letter of complaint, they still kept coming. So I kept all my junk mail, old newspapers & the letters they had sent etc, wrapped it all in a parcel, marked it free post, sent it all with a covering letter saying as you keep sending me this person's junk mail I will keep sending you mine. Never received another letter from them!!
