Sending Perfume abroad

Post by PA71 »

I was wondering if I could get some advice here from experienced posters and RM workers.

I recently posted a box of expensive perfume to a friend in the US using the Royal Mail Track and Sign option at a cost of £18 which they said would be delivered within 5-7 working days, It's now been 10 days and it hasn't been delivered so I tracked the item online and it says the parcel is still at the dispatch stage at Langley HWDC.

I tried to call Royal mail but all they have is an automated service. I did more search online and it appears that perfume is among prohibited items because apparently it is dangerous on airplanes!!! I am now very worried that my gift will not arrive at all. I then read online that Royal Mail dispose of these items and even sell them for profit on Ebay. The lady at the post office didn't say anything when I was posting.

I find it extraordinary that sending perfume is somehow dangerous while millions of people fly everyday with perfume packed in their luggage. How is this not contradictory?

I must be the only person in the UK who doesn't know you can't post perfumes abroad. I guess I know now. I just want to know what to expect next and whether I will get my parcel back at least as it was expensive. There is a sender address on the pack.

To the original poster perfume is ok but if sent in higher volumes it must go on a cargo plane these planes may take days because they pick up cargo from other country's on the way and then it is up to the local courier.

I suppose it would depend on the quantity, officially perfumes are not supossed to be sent by post, even eBay sellers say that on their websites, HOWEVER when I order aftershave or colognes from abroad, they are sent to me without a problem as that country has no restrictions on air shippings and having landed here, it came through with no problems, very contradictionary.

I wonder if surface mail via ships is available ? Its cheaper but takes longer. I sent large items back from Australia via surface mail when time wasn't important.

As with all flammable substances, perfume is dangerous to send by plane. This is why quantities are severely restricted when sending within the UK, and banned by international law, so it is illegal to send it outside of the UK. I am puzzled by the poster who said that they receive aftershave in the international mail, that shouldn’t happen.

Royal Mail are likely to seize the parcel. If they decide to destroy it there is no recourse because, as the sender, you have committed a criminal offence. I have not heard of them selling these goods on eBay, but the police auction seized goods, so I see no reason that RM shouldn’t do the same.

While the liability is all on the sender, the Post Office clerk should have (as a minimum) asked you what is inside the parcel and shown you the laminated Dangerous Goods card. When she found out it was perfume to the USA she should have refused to serve you. It would be helpful if you could make a complaint about the clerk to Post Office customer services (note: not Royal Mail). This will help other people get better service, protect aircraft and if you are lucky you might receive a small ex-gratia payment. You can complain using the webform here:

Thanks everyone for your replies. It was a 50ml bottle, so very small. I checked USPS and there is a green blob on "Tracking number created". I don't think it has gone further than that.

I think I am just about giving up on it being delivered. I am just hoping that it is sent back to me.
