Hi
I paid for special delivery to expedite receiving money through the post ahead of an overseas holiday. I was doing work out back and heard a knock on the door, at that point I went inside and reached the front door maybe 20 seconds after the knock (in between which time there was one more knock made). I unlocked my door and the postlady was standing there but she said she could no longer give me the parcel as I:
"came to the door too late, and I have already scanned it. If I rescan it I will be fined"
This meant I had to stand there as she filled out the red form for a further 30 seconds before she walked off with my package in front of me.
I really don't think taking 20s to answer the door is an unreasonable amount of time and I don't understand the business about her being fined if she gave me my package at that point at all. Is that true? What should have happened in this instance?
Not being able to get my post while I am standing right there in front of it has never happened to me before, any info on what should have happened would be appreciated.
Thank you.

I have never heard of anyone being fined.
Either your postperson was misinformed or they were being an arse for whatever reason.
The only reason I could possibly think of is if they were worried about rescanning it after 1pm. (But still no fines are applicable on a personal level)
So unless it was bang on 1pm when they first knocked I can't see any reason why they wouldn't let you sign for your Special Delivery.

Never heard of that
As far as I know as long as the first attempt is made before 1pm, that's all that counts
You could leave a note saying come back in half hour, and aslong as its first scanned pre 1pm as no answer, the 2nd one wouldnt be an issue if delivered at 1:30pm+
I reckon she's been late before and got a moan from the manager, so shes just being extremely over the top strict to prove a point to the managers

If you need it urgently keep tracking it and when it changes to ready for collection take some ID ect with you and you might be able to collect it this afternoon.
I don't normally advise this but I would also make a mild complaint as well,

Special Delivery question
Thanks for your replies.
To provide additional information, delivery was attempted around 11:40am. I will be driving out to collect the package this afternoon.
I thought the "fine" she gave as the reason seemed a bit suspect as I'd never heard of it before and I will be following it up to enquire why I wasn't able to collect my post despite answering the door.
Is there a contact number to do so?
Thanks again for all your help.

It is possible she is new and has misunderstood the procedure.
If her trainer had said something like - if we scan it late we have to pay compensation - she might have thought she personally would have to pay out of her own pocket.

There is absolutely no reason for her not to scan it again and get you to sign for it.
