Coming in on time, taking breaks, van checks, doing the job properly would be less stressful if we can just bring stuff back without needing to ask managers that you think you can't complete. Then management can look into walks that can't be done, they get paid enough to do jack anyway.
Its easy to just say do the job properly, but the hassle and stress the management put on some of our colleagues that try just isn't worth it and so a lot give in.
This is a great idea in theory, but realistically, every day can be different and this would be open to abuse with posties intentionally 'slowing down'. Although you can come in each day, have a look at your duty and think it looks an average day, once you're out, a multitude of unforeseen issues can arise, causing you to be over your time. It's not workable for the managers as they're gambling on anything being brought back, and having the availability for someone to clear the work on overtime.
On the second point, it's unfortunate many people submit to the harsh treatment of managers. It's a tough slog having the daily arguments and monitoring, but the best defense is to be truthful and sticking to your guns. Coming out the other end, both parties know where they stand and there is a mutual respect. The trouble is again, many abuse the situation, leaving more that is warranted or necessary.
