Missing date on post-marks

Post by shah312 »

Hello, Has anyone noticed and been upset with missing dates on post-marks.

Given digital printing, it is much easier to put dates on the post-marks but increasingly, mail is being delivered without a date. I had mail from the police but found it difficult to show they were being lazy and posting a letter a few weeks afterwards locally, as the envelope had no date. I have noticed a lot of 'Delivered by Royal Mail' marked items have not dates so does items which should have tracking. Have a look at below or on this page http://thestampforum.boards.net/thread/ ... ies?page=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Should this be stopped?

Technically they are not postmarks. In fact, they are PPI (postage paid Impression) numbers that tell Royal Mail who sent the item. PPIs don't have a date stamp requirement.

The first item has come through a Down Stream Access company and may have been delayed in their system.

The other 2 are direct Royal mail PPIs and would have gone through the system in 1 to 3 days normally from when they entered RMs systems.

thanks for the informative reply, I would still like to know when it was handled by Royal mail. Not having this information makes email so much more attractive

In defence of letters versus emails I can give an example of letters being more effective.

Apparently back at the end of May I received an email from my optician to state it was time for me to have my eyes tested again. They usually send me a letter but I guess for cost or whatever reason an email was sent instead. Anyway I ended up forgetting about the email even though I have hadn't deleted it. About two weeks ago they sent me a letter to remind me they had sent me an email before. That letter is on the side and I will book an appointment this week.
Therefore I would suggest letters are more effective than emails.

I didn't even know some letters still had a date on the postmark. I thought that stopped years ago. We don't even see many postmarks.

I thought it was for Royal Mail's benefit anyway, not something to be relied on by a customer. Is it a legal requirement?
