Poland to UK HELP!!?!

Post by JordGrady »

Right I ordered from Poland on Monday, the parcel contains live tarantulas. Website (spidersworld.eu)
They're known as the biggest tarantula supplier in the world. I and many have bought from the no probs.
They normally ship out on Monday so the parcel arrives on the Friday/Saturday.
My parcel left Poland on the Wednesday morning for the UK but checking the Poland carriers website and the royal mails my parcel has not made it to Langley. It has just been saying
" The item is now leaving the originating country more information will be available when it arrives in the UK"
There is no way it took 3days to get to the UK from Poland.
My first thought that customs has it as I know royal mail cant scan the tracker until customs has given it to them. But I cant see why customs would take time on my parcel!?
Is their a good chance my parcel has gone through customs but royal mail have forgot to scan the tracker?
If it was a normal parcel I wouldn't be to concerned but this one has live animals and they were not cheap! Someone please tell me what could of happened here!?

I think you will find some info in here https://personal.help.royalmail.com/app ... il/a_id/96" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but given these are potentially dangerous insects it would be a matter for customs as for that a grey card is the very least you can expect!

UK & International  - Allowed in the mail, see  restrictions and packaging guidelines below:

Live animals and reptiles are prohibited, as are any creatures or insects classified as dangerous within the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 (including certain venomous spiders).

Must be boxed and packaged to protect the creatures, our staff and our customers from harm.

Use 1st Class as the minimum service.

Items must be clearly marked "URGENT - LIVING CREATURES - HANDLE WITH CARE".

The sender's name and address must be clearly visible on the outer packaging.

Dead insects, sent as collectables, are allowed.

Tarantulas are not on the DWA it's perfectly legal to ship out tarantulas from in the UK and out.

How do customs determine they are what they say you say they are when since are tarantulas a native spices of Poland?

They are breeders, they dont take tarantulas out of the wild and sell them for profit.
They have their own website
(Spidersworld.eu)
If you're interested take a look
Their are over 800 different species of tarantulas out there and believe it or not it's very common for people to own them. There is even a website in the UK that sells them (spidershop) since tarantulas are not on the DWA (dangerous wildlife Act) they are perfectly legal to keep and sell internationally.
Even the sixed eyed sand spider the second most venomous spider in the world is not on the DWA and it's legal to keep them without a license.

I can see your point about the people at customs not knowing what they are but I and many others have bought tarantulas across waters and has never had a problem until now but their is always a first for everything right. Still highly unlikely.

I can see that you are very informed of your hobby and interested in spiders has no bounds in terms of knowledge of wildlife I don't make the laws of the land if it was me I would trade before war. As to your package I wish you all the best personally don't work in HWDC but I can only surmise the customs have it sorry for your inconvenience!

Many years ago we had a regular customer who sent live crickets for reptile food. I remember doing all the checks then to ensure that it was legal to send live animals, and it was at the time, though things do change.

The issue might be that, as they are an exotic species, they need to do CITES checks.

Batches of mail get chosen at random by customs for more detailed checks of the items in the batch, perhaps the package with the tarantulas in is in a batch that's been randomly chosen for extra checks

Unfortunately, it still hasn't came so far, I look at the royal mail tracking and it just keeps saying "the item is now leaving the originating country more information will be available when in UK" same message since Wednesday.
Where the hell is it? I dont know who to call.

Polish customs might be doing their own checks on it, i don't know if they choose random batches of outgoing mail to be checked for anything dodgy (CITES, dangerous goods, etc)

I would suggest calling the sender so he can chase the local postal service, and you contacting Royal Mail direct. We are not an official site so the advice on here is just that advice, its not official by any means.
