Keep receiving mail for someone not at address - advice needed

Post by NutriNotts »

Hi,
I've not posted on here before, but I need some advice concerning mail that I keep receiving at my address. Over the past few weeks, mail keeps arriving at my house for someone who does not live here. This includes letters from the DVLA, bank, and NHS. Now I know for a fact that there are no previous occupants at this address, since I am the only owner of this address since the house was built. I'm concerned that someone is clearly registering vehicles etc. at this address so want some advice. Should I just write 'return to sender' on each piece of mail and put it all back in the mailbox or should I contact someone regarding this mail, e.g. the agencies concerned, the police etc? I'm just concerned someone might be trying to use my address for fraudulent purposes.

I would say yes to both questions.

Return the mail endorsed as applicable, but also keep an eye out for possible identity theft, maybe even alert the bank to your concerns.

It might even be worth contacting the DVLA, NHS and the bank sending the unwanted mail to see what they suggest.

Just to add (and not being pedantic) as well as "Return to Sender" make sure you put a reason like "Not known at this address". I've had a few houses where the occupant thinks that "return to sender" by itself will stop mail addressed to them, but that they don't want, from being sent to them.

It's unlikely to be anything malicious.
There's not much to be gained by registering a vehicle at an address you don't have access to since the documents will go to that address. Are there any similar addresses in your area?

Suggest the opposite - if the individual registering the vehicle is 'dodgy' then speeding fines, court summons, bailiffs, boys in blue will all visit the address registered.
I deliver to an address where this has happened and over 3 years later, DVLA stuff, debt letters and court summons are still being sent to the named individual who never lived there, causes quite a bit of stress to the old boy who lives there. I always give him a knock just to confirm that he doesn't want the letters and RTS as not known but they still keep coming.
