Right road name, wrong postcode

Which takes precedence? My eBay customer has requested a refund for an item not received. I looked at the PoP and I noticed the postcode is one letter different to the actual postcode. I am normally pretty precise with addresses so am wondering if this was human error on the part of the post office clerk- the letter in question is next to the correct letter on a keyboard. Track and trace says the item has been delivered so would it have been delivered to the wrong street if I had put the postcode wrongly? Will I be able to claim for lost mail if the PoP postcode is one letter wrong?

Check with Royal Mail before you issue a refund - our scans have a GPS element in them and can see where it was scanned.

However, we delivery posties go by the address physically on the parcel, not by the postcode, so it's more likely to have been delivered correctly than not.

The mail centres do go by the postcode so there is an outside chance if the first part of the postcode is where the error was then it could have been sent to another area that had a similar address.

If you are not absolutely certain you have the correct postcode do not write it on the parcel - just put the name and address. Staff in the MCs only look at the postcode so the item will end up there. Worst case scenario is it will pinball for maybe a week between the MC and the incorrect DO until someone covers up the incorrect postcode.
I will give you an example of one common postcode mistake - there will be many more:
An HP prefix is written on a parcel by mistake instead of an MP prefix. HP is in Buckinghamshire whereas MP is in Wales. It's easily done and we see it a lot.

Was it one of the last two letters of the postcode that was wrong?
