Is my package lost?

Post by RedHatter »

I recently bought a book from Abebooks that shipped from Birmingham, United Kingdom to California, USA. I received a tracking number and kept an eye on the package but only one message ever showed on the royalmail website.
Your item is due to leave Birmingham Mail Centre to go to Heathrow Worldwide Distribution Centre. More information will be available as it travels through our network.
This was on August 10th. The estimated delivery was Augest 27th and it is now September 1st without any change. I can understand if it's taking a long time to ship internationally but shouldn't the tracking info change? Is this normal, or should I be worried? If there is a problem what's the next step to take?

Thank you!

Does the tracking number show up on the USPS website? Once it leaves the UK it's quite possible that it won't be scanned again until US customs release it to USPS. Over here it's not unusual for things to get stuck in customs for a few weeks, AFAIK US customs are one of the strictest in the world so chances are it's stuck in customs. It might be worth contacting your local USPS delivery office to ask them if it's stuck there waiting payment of a customs charge (i don't know what USPS's procedure is for any item that has got a customs charge).
