What's the worst/most annoying thing on your round?

Post by Patti-Ann »

Talking of hanging baskets, I've walked into one more than once.

One house I deliver to has recently put one up next to the front door and partially covered the mail box, so I have to manoeuvre the round the basket to get the mail in the box :d'oh!

Mail boxes with a slot on the front, meaning A4 size stuff has to be bent. Others have a slot on the top and you can just drop things in :dance

Houses with five or six steps but no hand rail. So you either have to turn round, with nothing to hold onto, or go down backwards, with nothing to hold onto. Even worse in winter :no no

I didn't see her there.

"Iv'e got to bend down and pick that up now" she said, and repeated that again. I replied, "Sorry I didn't see you"

"Stop moaning" I said out of earshot as I walked away, "the exercise will do you good".
I had something similar happen. Some time near Christmas, and the front door was slightly open, and obviously you can't push the mail through the letterbox if the door isn't shut or you just push their front door open. So I leaned over and dropped the mail through the gap between the door and the wall, and as I was walking down the drive, the woman inside came out and started yelling "do you mind not throwing my letters into my house??". I wasn't even sure if she was being serious so I just said "I didn't throw them at all", to which she replied "here's a Christmas tip for you - be a better postman".

The most annoying thing on a round I've done was the vertical, spring-loaded letterbox at eye level with a knocker over the top. You need one hand to hold the bundle, one to hold the post, one to lift the knocker out the way and another to hold the flap open ( ), all at eye level which makes it even more difficult. Even if you put the bundle on the floor, it's still really difficult to post letters through, which is weird considering the one and only purpose of a letterbox is for a postman to put letters through.

Here are the things I am learning to despise:

People who get drunk at the weekend and go on a massive Internet ordering spree, so it's 'Parcel Wednesday'. They always order squishy stuff which will fit through a letterbox, just that it takes two minutes to force each one of the three they've ordered, through. That, or they order small stuff that gets packaged in something exactly 1mm taller than their letterbox and the packet says Fragile, so you can't squash it.

Anyone who orders Screwfix, Studio or Next catalogues.

Low or vertical letterboxes.

The never f***ing ins, do they order their mountains of cheap plastic crap at work?

The never ups, you know when we deliver we don't know when you're n bed so drop the attitude.

The bane of every posties life, blocks of flats housing the terminally feckless. 9 flats and only one ever answers the intercom and invariably the remote lock is knackered. Worse still if they're on your lapsing and the one key/fob that took a year to acquire has been taken and never returned.

"That" guy who always manages to screw up the d2d accidentally on purpose. If they're prepped he does half, if they're not prepped he does none. If he knows which streets he should do he delivers the easiest ones instead Blocks of flats or top floor flats' post always comes back no access/mis sort.

The business with irregular opening hours or opening times after you're finished who bitches and moans when they get red carded or no post for a week. No I will not replan my walk just for you.

Oh I've got a million more....

Receptionists who ignore me...don't bother buzzing me into buildings tho they can see me as they are too busy on the phone and I must sit there waiting until they are free...possibly failing on the numerous registered items I have to deliver in order to keep this receptionist happy!

"That" guy turned out to be "Those" guys this week. One did no d2d and one did just over half what he was supposed to.

Vertical letterboxs are definitely a bane on my life. The ones that just barely fit A4 items, as long as you bend them. I had a magazine for one address that had a very thick spine and thus I couldn't get it in the letterbox. Never thought I'd have to 739 magazines but if he's not in and I can't get in the letterbox...

I've had that problem with a love film disk. Upto twice a week I had to p739 it because they was never in.

Uneven paving slabs, and roads that have tree roots that push the pavement up. I've tripped on both :mad

Stiff wrought iron letterboxes that need both hands to push them open.

One thing that really winds me up is even on the (occasional) light days when we do get a few decent gaps I can GUARANTEE I'll still have mail for all of the most out of the way calls... the houses with the longest driveways, the houses right down in the furthest corner of a cul-de-sac, the flats on the very top floor of a block.

I’m new, so not much yet but the main thing is letter boxes that require two hands And the few houses I go to with the letterbox on the BOTTOM of the door.

Low level letter boxes are the worst tbh, I'm sure I read somewhere that in some other countries, letterboxes are to be at a certain height (could just be wishful thinking, I'm sure someone on this forum will know for sure)
