Delivering to neighbour/ sorting office
What system do RM usually have when attempting to deliver items that cant be posted through letter box and /or need someone in to sign? I ask because at times I get a 'we missed you' card, for me to collect from SortingOffice, other times they leave it (parcel) with a neighbour. Would they usually try a neighbour first, and if no one in then leave a card, or automatically leave the card. I ask because I had an item left with a neighbour before Christmas, but because they were subsequently away, was unable to collect it until yesterday. if it had been made available at the SO I would have been able to collect it in time. I just wondered what the procedure was. I don't suppose I have any way of requesting that any non post box size items are automatically returned to SO should no one be in at initial delivery?

Actually, if you can have a word with your regular postie and ask them to return all items to the office rather than deliver them to a neighbour, they will probably be more than happy to comply with your request.
The actual process depends on too many things to list but ultimately the decision to leave with a neighbour or not is down to the delivery postman. although it is considered a Royal Mail standard to attempt to do so.

You can get an official sticker to put on or near your letterbox, instructing postmen not to deliver to neighbour. You could of course make your own.
As for a 'system'. . there is none. As a postman I make a decision on the doorstep. Are there cars on drives? Windows open? Lights on? Do I have time? Is there a safeplace? With local knowledge I'll know some people are desperate not to make the long journey to the Delivery Office, others hate their neighbours . . .
