Reds letter daze for Hutton

IfI wore a hat, I would take it off to the postal workers whose long campaign for pay and jobs is about to end.

For now.

The 130,000 members of the Communications Workers' Union have fought with discipline, loyalty and nerve.

For nigh on six months, they have taken industrial action that cost them dear, but also brought them great credit.

The posties are now voting on a pay package improved out of all recognition from the 2.5 per cent originally offered.

There is never any guarantee of success if you take industrial action. Only a guarantee of failure if you don't. Neither Royal Mail nor the government comes out of this dispute well.

Saddam Crozier, the million-pound-a-year chief executive (perhaps that should read "Adam"), and his part-time chairman Allan Leighton, the failed football club chief, tried to crush the CWU. They failed.

They were aided and abetted by Labour ministers - chiefly Business Secretary John Hutton - who wanted to cosy up to big business by backing the bosses.

Hutton the Mutton says the settlement will be good for the business and for consumers. I hope so.

But why was the minister silent on the value of this deal to the men and women who bring us our mail? He could have given them a few words of praise, but chose not to do so.

Hutton is the only member of the Cabinet who believes that Tony Blair is still the Prime Minister. That's what his actions tell us, at any rate.

Not personally, but I have recently spoken to Iraquis visiting the UK and the situation out there is nothing like many Daily Mail readers might believe, from children living on the streets to lack of basic services many things out there are now worse than they've been for decades, and as for how the US troops treat the local population there can have been few worse attrocities in the world in recent years. .

I propose a maximum ratio of 8:1 on pay ie highest paid in industry/business 8 x national average wage. Yeah and pigs might f*ckin fly but i still find it hard to believe we dont have enough decent, talented people to run industry with a responsible sense of proportions instead of the grabbing, avarice bunch of scumbags gorging themselves with huge salaries fat bonuses and bloated pension pots, some of them on dubious performance at that.

If a minimum wage can be introduced, then in theory a maximum wage can be too, but it will never happen as we will never see a socialist government again. What we need though is the higher rate of income tax much more than 40% - something like 90% after the war which gave the Labour government money to start the National Health Service etc.
