Extotrion as standard practice?

Post by JohnN »

I have just received a note through the door asking me to pay £1.50 in order for RM to deliver a letter. I am not the person that Royal Mail has a contract with, that is the seller. This practice is EXTORTION plain and simple. I have absolutely no idea what the letter is, if it is Important or not and RM will not even tell me who the sender is before I make a payment.

A few Things

1. We are not an official Royal Mail website so we can't give you an official reply.
2. This is standard practice when not enough postage is paid.
3. Royal Mail Customer Services doesn't know who the sender is as that information is not held anywhere except on the letter which is at the office named on the card.
4. You don't have to pay for it, after 18 days it will be returned to the sender with a sticker explaining why.
5. You can view the letter at the local office and then decide to pay for it or not (then perhaps make a claim against the sender), but they cannot give it to you till it has been paid for.

6. Next time your friend/relative sends you a letter with your birth certificate/passport/large amount of cash inside and it's underpaid I will gladly burn the item so you don't have the inconvenience of having to pay £1.50 to receive it. :d'oh!
