The welfare state has resulted in the working poor being played off against the non working poor.
There are no longer enough jobs to match the numbers looking for work. Many reasons for this - but the end result is that there are more on benefits than ever. This will only get partially better under Labour, cos they have a public infrastructure investment plan - but it will only get worse under the Tories. The only question is - what are you going to do with those that are no longer in employment ? Punish them - or let them share in the nations prosperity? Labour are the only party (in this country at least) that have seriously broached this problem and are looking at a Universal Basic Income.

You can't buy a house cos the credit has dried up - care of the credit crunch. The housing that you would have aspired to is now in the ownership of the private rented sector - and this is where the "benefits" bill is disproportionately obligated to servicing. ie. the private landlord. Michael Heseltine et al.
Private landlords get £9.3bn in housing benefit from taxpayer

I agree with you on that.
But the Labour Party is for the ordinary man and woman - don't let them tell you different.
