Royal Mail signing for Deliveries

Post by LiverGirls »

Hi,

I want to know if it is acceptable for Royal Mail delivery personnel to SIGN FOR deliveries ? I had an incident yesterday where firstly the delivery guy tried to leave the parcel with the business next door to us before attempting to knock on our door, then when he did knock on the door, he handed me a parcel saying he had already signed for it - made a strange gesture and walked off.

It is my understanding that the package is deemed not delivered unless someone actually signs their name as accepting the delivery. This guy just referenced our business name with a signature that resembles a 'cross'.

If I can make it clear that this is not a complaint (yet) or even a general query, but a genuine inquiry for confirmation of Royal Mail policy on this manner of conduct.

Do I need to report this ?

Thanks

Royal Mail signing for Deliveries

We aren't Royal Mail so I would suggest going to them for the actual policy.

However, in practice, no posties shouldn't be signing for Customers packets unless there is some reason that the person answering the door is incapable of doing so then there is a process to follow.

My advice, as a postie, is to have a word with the "offender" and ask them not to sign on your behalf, be as polite and friendly as possible. If it then continues then I would make a complaint. The reason I recommend talking to them first is that in some cases posties have been dismissed for similar "offences" when they thought they were helping the customer out. This may be the case with your postie so a quite word to put them right may be the best course of action. After that, if they do it again, they only have themselves to blame.
