Until about 6 months ago (maybe more) when I imported an item via Royal Mail it seemed to arrive at Heathrow, spend some time in Langley then having cleared customs it went to my local delivery office.
Now it seems to arrive, spend a few days in Langley, move to Coventry, spend more time there waiting for customs and then move on to my local delivery office.
The procedure seemed to be the same (and still seems to be the same now Coventry is in the mix) whether the item was coming Parcelforce or Royal Mail except the delivery offices are different.
I know Coventry is the UK hub but has the system changed or is Langley overwhelmed or is it just the luck of the draw whether it clears customs in Langley or Coventry?
Most of what I buy comes from the USA and my Parcelforce depot is Bristol and Royal Mail Yeovil if that makes any difference.

Import routing changed?
Langley is the overflow for Heathrow for Royal Mail (letters division) and is used when volumes are high. The route of Heathrow, Langley and then Coventry is I think only for ParcelForce items as this, as you say is their national hub.
At least if it goes through Coventry (or not) it will give you an indication of who is delivering it .
