What is the difference between a deaf person on delivery or wearing headphones? Should Royal Mail be not hiring Deaf people?

It still does not state no ear/headphones allowed in the latest 2016 booklet.POSTMAN wrote:It's a no as Teebs has posted, it's common sense as well.
With regards to the employee booklet it states...

You must:
- • support a safe culture and show this through
responsible behaviour;
• always take account of your own safety and that of others;
• always follow the appropriate safety rules, standards and
procedures, asking for an explanation if you’re not sure;
• use and maintain all controls, procedures and protection
provided for your safety and the safety of others;
Which would go in hand with...Dot let ignorance either kill you, seriously injure you...or get you the sack.SSOW Deliveries and Collections - August 2000 wrote:

Of course it won't, the booklet is a summary it will not hold every single agreement SSOW or what ever, that would mirror war & peace.Kings Norton wrote:It still does not state no ear/headphones allowed in the latest 2016 booklet.POSTMAN wrote:It's a no as Teebs has posted, it's common sense as well.

Surely • always follow the appropriate safety rules, standards and

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

A few guys prefer to wear earphones and listen to their own music in the delivery office (rather than out on delivery) because it prevents them from being pestered by line managers into doing any extra indoor work regardless of it being on the work plan or not.
Its far easier to prep your own frame and pretend that you can't hear the lino shouting everyone up to walk sort when you are wearing earphones. A DOM could try and force them to stop wearing them on the grounds of health & safety, but unfortunately the earphones then go in one ear and (left) out on the other

Who said this site was one sided, I find your post quite disgusting, and your workmates are what is wrong with this job.postslippete wrote:A few guys prefer to wear earphones and listen to their own music in the delivery office (rather than out on delivery) because it prevents them from being pestered by line managers into doing any extra indoor work regardless of it being on the work plan or not.

The actual headphones are the difference. A risk assessment has been made and they have banned them probably considering them a distraction. A deaf person wont have music distracting him.wookie wrote:What is the difference between a deaf person on delivery or wearing headphones? Should Royal Mail be not hiring Deaf people?
The simple issue for this thread is someone asked is there a rule banning headphones - Yes there is.
If you think the ban is daft then ignore it - you now know the consequences if caught.
Of course no one has ever been killed or distracted for a second wearing them have they ?

Sticking your headphones on and listening to a few tunes while walking around is always a more appealing prospect than being faced with all the noise of the world.
However, there could be some fatal side effects.
The number of pedestrians killed or injured while wearing headphones has grown in the US from 16 in 2004 to 47 in 2011, bringing the total number of cases in that period to 116.
The research, which was published in the British Journal of Injury Prevention, also found that over half of the incidents involved pedestrians who were run down by trains and two thirds of the victims overall, were males under 30.
The paper, which was headed by Richard Lichenstein of University of Maryland, Baltimore, warned that wearing headphones leads to a lack of awareness of your surroundings and lowers the resources the brain devotes to external stimuli.

I tend to speak as I find I'm afraid, Postman. Apologies if you find the post disgusting and you are quite right about a few of my workmates. They do it because they are lazy.

Point taken. My God, without headphones on my walk this job would be even more demoralising! But I will still wear mine outside.
