Tracking 13-character identifier help

Post by PickleB »

Hello

I have been given a tracking reference for a parcel coming from France that begins with HY and ends in JF.

UPU's technical standard S10 Identification of postal items – 13-character identifier tells me that: HY identifies it as an "e-commerce parcel" and that "the use of HX–HY requires multilateral agreement". So far, so good.

It's the JF that I need would like some help with, please. S10 says (at 5.1 & 5.5) that characters 12 & 13 "shall be the two-character ISO 3166–1 code of the UPU member country under whose authority the S10
identifier was issued." But JF is not an ISO 3166 country code.

Can anyone tell me what the JF means, please?

Many thanks...

A little additional information; the company is Chronopost and they are part of the Groupe La Poste, that (according to WIki) came into being when the French PTT was first divided and then turned into a public-owned company.

Their sister company is DPD, so I'm waiting to see who delivers my parcel: RM; PF; DPD or someone else.

JF may be an internal code for the company if so it's likely to remain within DPDs processing system.

If it does get passed to Royal Mail, without a recognised country identifier it may not track successfully within the system, but it should be scanned at certain points along its route.

In essence, all you can do is keep an eye on DPDs and RM tracking system and hopefully, it will be delivered at some point. Chronopost do have their own tracking site that may help http://www.chronopost.fr/en/private/track-your-parcel" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks for that. Yes, I'm watching all three companies.

I too suspect, but don't know, that the companies formed after the break up of PTT have adopted their own Fn identification codes. My other thought is that JF may be a usage that is agreed between the nations of the "multilateral agreement" and so be recognised by their sorting/routing software.

If it's not a valid barcode the item won't be tracked at all in Royal Mail's system, it might even get flagged as a surcharge

Tracking 13-character identifier help

As might be expected, my parcel is now being handled by DPD(UK) and is out for delivery. It has been given a new, all digit, tracking number and, since reaching their UK hub, appears on the DPD tracking site. It still appears on the French Chronopost site with the correct data of DPD's handling in the UK.

It remains interesting, at least to me, that a company derived from the French PTT uses a quasi-UPU identifier for its own purposes. How very French...

Thanks, one and all, for your input.
