Dear Royal Mail Chat,
On the 23/01/17 I sent a parcel using International Track & Trace to Japan, no: RN035707205GB
I have sent parcels to the same address a couple of times before and never had any problems.
When I tracked the parcel on the Royal Mail website I found that the item has arrived in Auckland, New Zealand on 26/01/17. The RM site still says it's there and no attempt to deliver the item has been made.
Here is the tracking info from RM:

The parcel had the address clearly and correctly written, with Japan written in capitals and highlighted in bold as per the RM website. It also had my address as the sender in case of a problem.
I would like to find out what should happen next. Will the item be returned to me or will it be forwarded to Japan from New Zealand?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Luke

It will be sent on to Japan, once the New Zealand postal service realise. It will probably have to clear NZ customs first. There may be a loss of tracking as the tracking systems are not set up for this. Expect it to take a couple of weeks to reach it's correct destination.

Royal Mail has sent my Internation Track & Trace to wrong country
Thanks for the information Snaggletooth it means a great deal for my peace of mind.
As I mentioned I have sent items to Japan via RM track and trace and had no problems. It will have to think twice before using it again as I do want to send another item out to Japan in the future.
I have spoken to RM via email and Twitter and they pretty much said the same thing although it would be nice if I was able to track what has happened with it being in New Zealand since 26/01/17 or if RM could give more detail.
Is there a certain point were the tracking will be updated?
Again thanks for the response and anymore help from anyone else is most welcome.
Kind regards,
Luke

It's probably got to go through NZ customs before the postal service get hold of it and, in most countries of the world, customs take ages and don't have any tracking equipment. Having said that, when I worked for the PO, Japan were always one of the best. So tracking isn't likely until customs are cleared, and if it works after that is unpredictable in these circumstances.

Thanks again Snaggletooth. My experience with the Japanese postal service has always been pretty good, whether it be sending or receiving. Same can be said of RM.
It's just that the parcel has been in New Zealand for close to a week and not sure how long they take when items are sent to them by mistake. It would be great if anyone has any experience of an item being sent to New Zealand by mistake and how long it took for the item to get to its right destination.
Could you give me a breakdown of what should happen with the parcel when it has been sent to the wrong country? what should the chain of procedures be? When it clears NZ customs would it be sent to Japan?
Sorry for all the questions its just something new to me.
Kind regards,
Luke

It will only update once Royal Mail, or whichever courier they use, scan it into their system.
While its in Customs, for Security, Legal and safety checks there is no tracking available, and there is no time limit on how long they keep it.

Royal Mail has sent my Internation Track & Trace to wrong country
Just wanted to give an update about the situation of the parcel.
I received an email from New Zealand Post stating that the parcel had been misrouted to NZ and has now been forwarded to Japan on 1/2/17.
I also had a reply from Royal Mail that said the parcel had arrived at the Office of Exchange in Japan on 2/2/17.
Looks like the parcel has arrived in Japan safely and should start getting updated on the tracking website soon.
Will update when the parcel gets delivered.

Royal Mail has sent my Internation Track & Trace to wrong country
Hi everyone,
Just wanted to give an update about the parcel to Japan and ask a question about another parcel I have sent to Japan.
The first parcel was delivered on Monday without any problems so that was good news.
The second parcel #RN356680188GB was sent to Japan on 6/2/17 and it contained model flowers and model butterflies. It also had the required info, ie: senders address and recipients address clearly written as well as the customs CN22 form.
Currently on the RM tracking site it says Arrived (MDN) at Heathrow Worldwide DC on 6/2/17 at 23.36 and has not changed since. I have read on this forum that it most likely is being held up at customs but just wanted to ask about peoples experiences and for any more information.
Thanks in advance.
Luke
