Securing mail against mailbox break-ins

Post by Truffles3 »

Hello all,

I live in a block of flats with individual mailboxes on the ground floor. Recently there has been a spate of break ins where someone has levered open the doors to the mailboxes and stolen mail. Sometimes the front door is left open, and while I shut it myself when I see it open, there are 20 or so flats in this block and not everyone is careful.

So, I am looking for advice on how I can secure my mail. I have some ideas of my own and I would welcome other suggestions. I will obviously call the management company and try to get them to do something about it, but I don't have a great deal of confidence (if you've ever dealt with a flat management company, you'll understand).

Firstly, is it reasonable to ask my postman to deliver to my flat (2nd floor) rather than to the ground floor mailbox? My thinking is that I could possibly attach a mailbox to my flat door (A letterbox opening would be better, but I believe it would breach fire regulations as there is an alternative place to drop mail). I could choose one that is a bit more solid than the flimsy ones downstairs; something that would take too much time and noise to break into to be worthwhile.

I've also considered getting a PO box, but they're too expensive to be a long term solution.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The postman has to deliver to the official post box because of H&S rules so you are correct there.

However, you may not have heard of call and collect, it's a service where your mail is separated during prep and then passed to the callers office where you can collect it from

This is a crime, so I hope you have reported it to the police.
