Can I post this to Europe via Royal Mail?

Post by youradds »

Hi,

We have just launched a new product (a powerbank battery). However, I just happened to notice when up at my local post office (dropping some parcels off), that it mentions about not being able to send batteries internationally. Would this be the case for this item?

Thanks for the clarification :)

In the UK Its just the batteries by themselves that are banned. If inside a product and original packaging it should be okay, but you must tell the staff member all relevant details so they can be sure.

Lithium ion/polymer/metal/alloy batteries when not sent with, or contained in/connected to an electronic device, are prohibited.

Lithium ion/polymer/metal/alloy batteries are allowed when sent with or contained in/connected to an electronic device, but are subject to packaging, volume and quantity restrictions. Please see http://www.royalmail.com/restrictedgoods" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
But you would have to check the destination countries specific requirements to make sure they won't destroy it, or send it back.

A way round it may be if you order it from the countries amazon site, not sure if thats possible though.

Oh, blimey, this question came up almost as soon as the dangerous goods regulations came in and I still don't know the answer. The problem is that we couldn't work out if a power bank is a lithium battery (not allowed) or a piece of equipment with a lithium battery in (allowed, with caveats). I don't work for the Post Office any more, so unless someone else can come up with an up-to-date answer I would talk to Royal Mail customer services on 03457 740 740. Or ask Amazon, because if they are posting them out to the UK for you they should know if it counts as a battery or equipment.

Some other things you will need to know if posting abroad:
  • It doesn't matter whether it is being posted within the EU, other European countries or other continents, the rules are divided between UK destinations and non-UK destinations (so Dublin is non-UK). That largely determines what you can send and how you can send it according to Royal Mail / Civil Aviation Authority / IATA rules. Non-EU destinations require a customs form.

Over and above that, about 35 countries ban lithium batteries from the mail full stop, so anything you sent there would be subject to confiscation and destruction. Germany and PR China are the most obvious examples.

Whether UK or overseas, you must follow strict packaging guidelines to send lithium batteries in the mail. Failure to follow these is a criminal offence. Amazon sell loads of things like this should know what they are doing: I bought a power bank from them nearly a year ago, I think they sent it via their own delivery network, thus sidestepping the legal issues of sending it in the mail (carriers that don't use planes probably aren't subject to these laws). If you want to look it up yourself, see here: http://www.royalmail.com/business/help/ ... cted-goods" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for UK and http://www.royalmail.com/personal/help- ... s-overseas" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for overseas.

Thanks for the replies guys! I'm hoping we can send these all from Amazon (we also sell on eBay, but I tend to use FBA to send it - which they use Royal Mail a fair bit, so was just curious). Maybe I'll give Amazon a call later on, and see what they say about the matter (I don't want to go through all the effort of creating the international listings / paying for translations, only to find out we can't actually deliver to those countries =))

Thanks again for your time

Andy
