Sending postcards abroad

Post by mike821 »

Hello,

When I was visiting England, I wanted to send a postcard to Belgium.

I bought stamps from a WHSmith branch. The employee told me that I could use a 1st class stamp (63p).

I thought I needed to buy a £1 stamp to send a postcard abroad. Am I mistaken? Can I send postcards abroad using only one 1st class stamp?

For the next time, is it acceptable if I put two 1st class stamps (2 x 63p = £1.26) on the postcard instead of a £1 stamp?

Thanks :-)

I believe that you were wrongly advised by the cashier. I'm pretty sure that a postcard to Belgium should cost £1.

2 X 2nd class stamps would have been enough to get it there if no £1 stamps were available - they add up to £1.08.

The EU rate, which allowed letters up to 20g to be sent for one ordinary first class stamp, lasted for less than 5 years and was abolished about 15 years ago (IIRC), yet still you hear people mention it! That shows the power of simple marketing messages.
