I have to correct you, you are actually talking about the 'XMAS (not shouting ) period'. The XMAS period INCLUDES (for emphasis so not shouting) New Year. I too am talking about 'over XMAS' ie XMAS period ie approx mid-December to first week January.

Extra over the XMAS period is what I said when I clarified my comment. We have already had this conversation. People in Scotland have an extra day off over the XMAS period.

That is an indisputable fact.

So I am not wrong. You are wrong.

To get the 2 January as a non service day for Scotland they would have had to ask permission. The reason they gave for 26th Dec was that there is expected to be very little mail either needing collection or delivery. Unfortunately as England will be working on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday then there will be a lot of traffic. DO I agree with RMs decision not to ask, no, but I think its daft to blame the Union.

The Saturday is a normal working day England will be working it, if Scotland did as well then they should get the Monday off, but as they have the Saturday off as a bank holiday, that would mean getting a non service day on the Monday would mean an extra day off.

Do any Scottish colleagues remember what happened in 2009 that's the last time this happened.

PS I don't think a day off is worth getting angry about, especially when people are just discussing it on here, and ultimately no-one on RMC can make any difference to the decision thats already been made. :Very Happy

The last time the 2nd fell on the Saturday we went back to work on the Monday, I don't think we're being shafted at all, Getting the 26th and the 28th of December is a bonus :thumbup

That Good Friday holiday is a bizarre one IMO, off on the Friday and back Saturday, I'll take Jan 2nd every time :nana

But they did ask and were granted an exemption to the USO for both 26th and 2nd, stating in the screenshot I quoted in the OP that low volumes were exoected for both days, then decided to make the saturday our public holiday rather than a non service day, they are treating Scotland differently from the whole of the UK the previous weekend.

but we have not lost out on a day off, we are not getting any less than we are entitled to, we have just not gained an extra day off, everyone gained an extra day off for boxing day, if Scottish staff were to gain an extra day off for 2nd January only that would be discrimination,

Perhaps someone can explain this.
This year December 26th is a Saturday, it has been declared a non service day and the bank holiday has been transferred to the Monday.
In 2010 when Jan 1st last fell on a Saturday it was made a non service day and the bank holiday was transferred to the Monday.

When Jan 2nd a bank holiday in Scotland falls on a Saturday it is not made a non service day and the bank holiday is not transferred to the Monday.

Are Scottish bank holidays less important?
The vast majority of people in Scotland will be off on Monday 4th January including our family members but we won't, so much for a family friendly business.

Then someone at RM or ofcom are telling untruths the http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... nk#p710829" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Other issues
4.18 We note the CWU’s suggestion for an exception to the universal service for other official bank holidays which may fall on a Saturday e.g. New Year’s Day, 2nd
January in Scotland
and the Battle of the Boyne holiday in Northern Ireland. Royal Mail’s application was for an exception for Boxing Day only. Therefore, the CWU’s
comments are outside the remit of our consultation and decision.

4.19 We would refer the CWU to Ofcom’s decision statement on an exception to the universal service for the day after the Battle of the Boyne holiday in Northern Ireland
The Direction already grants an exception to the universal service when 12 July falls on a Saturday and applies in perpetuity

And the argument Scotland shouldn't have their bank holiday honoured because it would mean they might get an extra day off is petty, NI gets 2 days more every year and good luck to them, better to drag everybody's terms up than drag everybody's down through petty jealousy.

I don't think anyone has posted to say that the Scotland shouldn't have the bank holiday honoured, my point specifically said if the extra day was only given to Scottish staff that would be discrimination

Is the answer to do with the 2nd Jan (Scottish hol not rest of UK) being on a different day of the week year to year so giving the possibility of an extra day off when it falls on a Sat/Sun. Whereas the Easter Monday (rest of UK not Scotland) always being on a Monday means the rest of the UK can never benefit from an extra day off as this holiday can never fall on a Sat /Sun?

If that is the reason it is sound because if all weekend 2nd Jan's were transferred to a Monday then Scotland would have this benefit of an extra day off now and again but no one else n the UK would ever have that opportunity from an Easter Monday holiday falling on a weekend.

We get easter monday as a holiday in Scotland, its Good Friday that we swap for 2nd january.
The fact remains, that the two weekends, christmas and new year, are being treated differently for no apparent reason.

Do you believe that giving an extra two days only to N,I staff every year is discrimination?
If it was it would have been to tribunal a long time ago.

OK it's the Good Friday. But the 'no apparent reason' could be as I say that because Good Friday will never benefit from being moved to a Monday whereas the 2nd Jan can and does get moved on to the Monday giving you up there an 'unfair advantage' of extra days off over a period of time (eg 10 years). If the 2nd is a straight swap for Good Friday then it is being treated as if the 2nd was always falling on a Friday. Which seems fair as it keeps you in line with the rest of the UK in terms of numbers of days away from work.

By the way 2nd Jan is not universally accepted as a holiday in Scotland and plenty of firms including some banks will be working as normal or with reduced service.
