Why is Glasgow Post Town so huge?

Post by PeterR »

Something that has often occurred to me to wonder. Why does Glasgow Post Town cover such a wide area, including places like Cumbernauld and East Kilbride which appear from satellite images and from driving through/past to be physically separate from the urban area of Glasgow itself?

I'm not sure that anybody in Royal Mail and the Post Office pay much attention to the post town, it's all about the postcode. But I would say that Scottish addresses do not seem to mention the county as frequently as English ones, and that might be part of the answer.

East Kilbride and Cumbernauld are seperate towns in their own rite and do not show glasgow in the address Do you mean why do the have a G post code? Most post code areas are quite large, the paisley PA area is huge not sure if it's the biggest or if Inverness IV is but they are both bigger than glasgow,

Dear zx135
Searching for postcodes of customers in Cumbernauld (G67 2JE) and East Kilbride (G75 8FX) and Kilsyth (G65 0ER) each has GLASGOW in capitals on the line after the town name.

Best wishes

Searching where? As each of those are towns in their own rite and do not need glasgow in the address, in fact all three are recognised as seperate towns

On the Royal Mail address lookup, http://www.royalmail.com/find-a-postcode" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , check out any of those three postcodes I gave, and you will see that GLASGOW is part of the address and is in CAPITALS. On the other hand I note that both the Royal Mail and Post Office sites have recently dropped "Post Town" from their websites' addressing guidelines and now just refer to "town":

"If the property has a full name, this can take up one line and drop the street name onto the next line.
Next line can be used to name the local area or village name.
Next line should be for the town. Write the name of the town in capital (upper case) letters."

Now whether this is an official policy change or just a case of some 17-year old designer having written the website without knowing what they are talking about, I don't know. It's a recent change as Google still references equivalent pages (now disappeared) that spoke of the "post town". There'd be no point in using capitals as RM still suggests (and for some products, requires), if it was not one particular town that was the correct one to write in capitals for the address - and if you just use "town" there is no way of knowing which is the correct one.

Searching for "post town" (in quotes) at the main Royal Mail home page search box brings up many references, several of them from this year, so it seems that the change in the the Clear Addressing page http://www.royalmail.com/personal/help- ... -correctly" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is mere dumbing down.
