58,000,000 items posted daily on average - so in a month 1,392,000,000 even with a loss rate of 0.001% that 13,920 items.

But, there is something you may not have considered, although you put the return address on the parcel, doesn't mean its still on there. Its possible that the wrapping has been damaged in some way and thats why it couldn't be delivered or returned. Hopefully a full description of the item was taken and if so the chances are good it will appear at some point.

i would have thought that if it was sent recorded . then sent back to a hub it would have been scanned ? but when i call customer service they have no further info on the item . other than that its down to be returned to sender . poor system if the bar scanning cant be updated after its been returned to where it is at .!

Sorry but we are not here to defend the system, we are an unofficial site and are just trying to give customers an insight, or advice, in our own time. If you want to make an official comment, or get an official response, you probably need to find another channel to do so.

By the way, if you sent it recorded then that is not a trackable system, its only scanned on attempted deliveries, collection from the PO by RM, or when finally handed over to the recipient or sender.

i understand that , but surly if it can be scanned on delivery ! there should be a system in place when its scanned into the lost items ! then it would show up at the depot it was at ..

you still need to go through customer services unfortunately, basically to simplify it for you, there is that many items lost in the post(although its a extremely small percentage of items carried) its prohibitively expensive to search for you individual item, it may not even be at the returns centre it could have gone there and then went to another delivery office anywhere in the country or even technically the world, so thats why they just wait see if it turns up if not pay out the compensation for the service used far far cheaper doing that than trying to find it amoung the many thousands of items at the returns centre every day

as for it not being scanned, unfortunately thats because of the service selected it could easily be scanned but its not part of the service that was paid for, there are other services available which would have it tracked every single step of the way to the customer and back or to the returns centre.

Going back to TBT's point, if the packaging was damaged then the barcode might be missing or unreadable. So there is no 100% reliable system, every single option has some kind of potential point of failure.

As it's 5 weeks or more since posting, you should really have put in a lost parcel form by now. That will help you reclaim part or all of the contents value. If the packaging was damaged then it will also help the lost letter people to return your item to you if applicable as they will have a chance of matching the contents with you as the owner.

sorry if i didnt make that clear but i have put in a lost item notice and sent the orig certificate of first class recorded posting .. but still there is no sign of royal mail customer services knowing where the item is at all in the system. ! and yes i know there is other tracked more expensive services . but should i really be thinking when i post a item i must have it totally tracked in case it gets lost via royal mail !!!

Being completely honest customer services haven't and won't actually look for your item on your request. No one will it costs far too much to do that. At the returns centre they will try to match items received with the sender if possible and the claim form helps with that but if not possible if not it will be disposed of also if you have been waiting 5 weeks now then I doubt the item will be found and you will just get the compensation paid out
