Parcel Delivery Help

Post by heyheyhey11 »

Hi guys,

I don't post parcels etc. only letters but I have to now post a small box containing a phone.

Within England, has to be tracked and signed for.

Parcel dimensions;

Length - 20cm
Width - 15cm
Depth - 15cm

I went to get a quote (£7.15), Royal Mail
Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm®.

I would appreciate it if anyone would confirm I'm using the right service? Also, I wish to go to a PO and post it, will they print labels for it?

Thank you so much in advance!

If you mean address labels etc then no, it is your responsibility to write the address on there. You might want to ask the PO for a Special Delivery polythene envelope to put your box inside to increase the security of the package, this is free.

For most purposes the battery should not be packed separately: see the link that TBT posted!

Hi,

My post was probably a bit misleading. I meant battery not inside the phone, but still in the same box individually wrapped, just like it came.

Apologies. The parcel was posted and received.

Thanks all for your help!

The battery is supposed to go in the phone. You are quite lucky that this wasn't picked up by Royal Mail because it could have been destroyed!

1. The rules for new and used lithium batteries are different: just check the link that TBT posted. A phone posted to you direct from the phone company with that little bit of plastic over the battery terminals and in unopened original packaging is different to a used/opened battery.
2. A lot of phones arrive by couriers other than Royal Mail, it's possible that some of them do not use air transport at all and are therefore exempt from the Dangerous Goods Act.
3. The law is not well understood and widely flouted.

Royal Mail do destroy packages like that on a regular basis.

The reason for the rules on Lithium Batteries:

6th September 2010 Crew reported radio problems and smoke in the cockpit of the B747-400 freighter shortly before the crash. The cause was not known at the time, but is now known to be a fire caused by lithium batteries. The 2 US pilots had reported problems and were attempting to return to Dubai’s main airport shortly after taking off.
The aircraft crashed in an unpopulated area 50 minutes from departure. Non-rechargeable and rechargeable lithium batteries are flammable. (IFW) http://www.airportwatch.org.uk/air-frei ... ts/?p=4421" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

29th July 2011 Another cargo plane has crashed, killing its two pilots, due to fire in the cargo hold caused by lithium batteries igniting. The Asiana Airlines’ B747 freighter was off South Korea when it crashed into the sea. It was claimed the pilot had shouted “cargo fire” and “emergency” about 10 minutes before the aircraft disappeared from radar screens. It was carrying electronic products, mobile phones, liquid crystal displays, LEDs, lithium batteries and liquid 29th July 2011 http://www.airportwatch.org.uk/?p=3521" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A United Parcel Service Inc. Boeing DC-8 that was destroyed by fire on Feb. 7, 2006, in Philadelphia contained “numerous” lithium batteries in computers and other devices, a National Transportation Safety Board investigation found. The three crew members escaped as flames engulfed the jet shortly after landing. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/ ... other-year" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So to clarify,

If I want to send a mobile phone with a battery, it needs to be inside the phone? I'm not understanding fully here

Its not as simple as that as it depends on the type of battery as well. However, in simple terms:

New phone still in original packaging - its okay for the battery to be separate as long as its still in it original packaging and unsealed.

Any other phone - must be transported with the battery in place and working.

and they ALL need the correct warning labels applied and the correct declarations made etc.
